Hello! Yes I'm still alive and I have been struck by inspiration… just the wrong kind. I havn't been able to get this out of my head so I thought I would type it up for you guys. Please enjoy! Z.
Disclaimer: I don't own the Teen Titans. If I did then Teen Titans Go would never have existed.
They Never Knew
The lights flashed in a steady rhythm that seemed to be just a touch slower than his racing heart. Beastboy looked down at the scrap of cloth that lay in his hands. The young shape shifter had been uncharacteristically quiet since the firefighters had forced him to sit for the paramedics as they bandaged his ravaged hands. He had been digging for hours, ignoring questions and pitying glances as he had searched for his teammates.
It had all started so normal, fighting Mad Mod. Chasing him down the middle of town, when it had all gone wrong. The civilians had all been evacuated minutes before, in fact he had noticed a few stragglers as he had run as a cheetah after his teammates. It had all happened so fast. One second there was a gigantic explosion as one of Robins exploding baterangs and Mad Mods spells had met midair right next to building that was being repaired. Then, as if in slow motion, the entire seven story building had collapsed right on top of his teammates.
Mad Mod got caught just enough to knock him out. Beastboy tied him up with some zip ties that Robin had wanted everyone to start carrying just for this situation. Then he started to look around and his heart started sinking.
"Guys?" He yelled in the deadly quiet of the city street. His pulse quickened as all that answered him was silence.
"This isn't funny!" He yelled, getting angry for just a moment. They his eyes widened as he looked over to the pile of rubble, all that was left of the apartment building and the deli that had been across from it, the deli having taken the brunt of the falling building. He transformed into a Mega-Sloth, digging into the rubble and ignoring the way it dug into the soft parts of his paws. He growled/screamed as he dug, dirt flying around him. Then he saw it, it was pinned beneath a rock that had been under a large piece of concrete that he lifted. It was almost completely covered in sticky red blood, dying the yellow of the inside of Robins cloak a dark red.
He had finally stopped and shrank to his normal size at that point, grabbing the scrap of fabric off the ground. He had stood frozen long enough that the firefighters had finally felt safe leading him away. He didn't even realize he had been digging for hours and that his hands were covered in his own blood.
"Beastboy, what happened?" He looked up at the chief of police. In a dead voice, the changeling told his story and the Chief just nodded sadly.
"Go back to the tower. You're no use to us here in the state you're in right now. We'll call you using the emergency line if we find anything."
"You mean when you find their bodies."
"You don't know they are dead yet son. Don't give up on them yet." The green young man just morphed into a raven and flew off. When he got to the tower, he changed clothes and then went to the common room and just sat down. The scrap of fabric still in his hands. It seemed like hours before he jolted upright and ran down the hall towards the titan's rooms.
"Raven what do you think he's doing?" Robin asked the young sorceress.
"I don't know but I do know that I need to concentrate to regain control of my powers," Raven said meditating. The four titans were very much alive, just trapped inside a bubble of Ravens powers. The panic she had felt like the building collapsed on them had caused her powers to react and it saved them but now, she couldn't get the bubble of magic hiding them to dissipate.
"He better not be going where I think he's going." That was all she said as she tried yet again to reign in her wayward powers only to growl as they eluded her.
The changeling stopped outside Cyborg's bedroom door, typing in the code quickly and rushing into the room. He went over to the computer and booted it up. With a growl, he started typing, trying to guess the password. After just a few minutes he rolled his eyes, the word MEAT working. He searched through the list of programs, stopping at one labeled TRACKER. The program booted up then displayed an error message, "No signal detected."
"Oh god… Cy…" A few tears escaped his eyes as he mourned for his best friend. With a growl, the young man ran from the room.
"I didn't know BB knew about that." The cyborg said, curious about how much his friend really knew about him.
"Why does friend Beastboy not see if me or Robin are alive," Starfire asked, nursing a bump on the head as she sat on the bottom of the bubble next to Robin.
"He must think that I'm dead cause of the piece of my cloak he found. And I don't think he has any way to check on you Starfire." Robin replied, keeping a piece of his cloak on the cut on his leg.
Beastboy stopped at Raven's bedroom door, pausing for a moment. A pained look on his face as he contemplated what he was about to do.
"Sorry Raven." He said quietly as he changed into a Grizzly and ripped the door apart, not knowing the code to get in. The changeling shrunk down as he stepped into the room cautiously, his ears twitching on the side of his head as his nose scrunched. He sidestepped a bolt of energy as he crossed a line of ash on the floor.
"That's it… I think." He said as he sneezed. "Sulfur… yup. Definitely Ravens kind of trap." He swiped at his nose a few times as he looked around the room. Sitting on her desk was Nevermore. The green titan cautiously walked over to, slowly picking it up. Only to find that it was black.
"Hey! Rage! Happy! Timid! Anybody!" He yelled at it as tears pooled in his eyes. "Please…." He whined almost animalistically as he sunk to the floor.
The other titans watched in pained silence as Beastboy started to cry. It started out almost silent then gradually he started to change color. The normal bright green slowly turning into a sickly green then an almost white. Also, his cries turned into the pained whimpers of some kind of animal. Then his form began to change, gradually turning into none other than the Beast itself.
Yet, it wasn't the Beast, this seemed like a younger version of the monstrosity that had forced itself into their lives. It was smaller for one, and it didn't have quite as big or thick of a mane. Its snout was shorter, and it seemed to give off a timid air as opposed to a violent one.
This new version of the Beast lifted it head and howled; long, low and pained filled. The Beast curled around Raven's mirror and shuddered as it cried.
The titans stared in confusion, not understanding what was happening.
"Did you know BB could change color?" Cyborg asked.
"He tends to change slightly on occasion but never this drastic," Starfire said, much to everyone's confused looks.
"Have you never noticed Friend Beastboy's changes?" She asked confused.
"No Star, what do you mean?" Robin asked.
"Well, he changes color when he changes emotion. Not a lot but a few shades." She explained slowly, trying to find the right way of explaining it. "When he is Happy, bright green; sad, a sick green; angry, a dark green. Again only a few shades."
"I've finally gotten control of my powers; do you think he's safe for me to reveal us to him?" Raven asked almost hesitantly, remembering the last time she had faced a a similar beast.
"We won't know till we try." Robin said as he and Starfire stood up.
The demoness quietly let the bubble of power dissipate, all of the titans stood motionless for several minutes as the Beastboy lay curled up crying. Then he stiffened, his animal instincts alerting him to the presents of the others. Beastboy lifted his head and stared at them for a moment, not understanding. He slowly got up and walked over to them, still clutching Raven's mirror to his chest. The titans tried to remain calm as the Beast approached them. Raven flinched back slightly as the Beast gently lifted one hand to touch her face.
"Raven?" The gravely rumble startled all four of the titans as Beastboy gently ran a clawed finger down the side of her face.
"Hey, idiot. My powers got the better of me. That's why you couldn't reach us." Raven said softly. Beastboy gently set down her mirror and then wrapped his arms around her and pulled her into a hug, taking huge shuttering breaths.
"You're alive… Your alive…" Beastboy said softly, unbelieving lyrics, taking a breath of her hair almost unconsciously.
"Hey Green Bean, any reason you look like a young Beast?" Cyborg asked out of the blue, making the green changeling tense up. Then his skin seemed to turn stark white and he ran, faster than any of them expected him to.
"Beastboy!" Robin yelled after him, almost tripping trying to catch the fleeing changeling.
It had been several hours since they had lost Beastboy. They had searched the entire tower except the basement. Ever since Raven's powers had gone out of whack that one night, the team had avoided the basement as much as possible. Now it was the only place left that they hadn't been checked for Beastboy.
Cyborg led the way with a large light shining out of his shoulder, the others following with flashlights in hand. Even with the small searchlight shining out his shoulder, the tallest titan only illuminated a few feet in front of them.
"Come on… come on… change back…" They heard Beastboy saying to himself from somewhere near them. The team saw him curled up in the middle of one of the many pathways.
"Beastboy, are you ok?" Robin asked as he stepped toward his friend. The shapeshifter stiffened and realized he was backed into a corner.
"This isn't what it looks like." He squeaked out.
"It looks to me like you've been keeping secrets dude." Cyborg chimed in. The beast on the floor let out a quiet noise of distress.
"Why do you look like this friend Beastboy?" Starfire asked flying forward and hovering over him just a bit. The alien poked him in the cheek as she quirked her head to the side. Beastboy was quiet for a long moment before he sighed and got up.
"This is what I actually look like now." He said apprehensively, motioning his hands down toward his body.
"No, you're a green shape-shifting kid but you're still just a kid." Robin said his voice questioning.
"Not since that stupid serum. When I completely relax my transformation, this is what I turn into. I have to concentrate to be human!" Beastboy growled as he took a step forward. Instinctively Raven made a shield of power in front of herself and the other Titans.
"I'm more animal than human now Robin! I've been fighting my instincts for months now. I have to concentrate all the time just to be normal. I'm a freak!" He turned and slammed his fist into the wall behind him, leaving a dent in the metal.
"I guess this means I'm not a Titan anymore huh?" Beastboy said as his violent, angry green skin changed into a muted pale green.
"You're still a Titan idiot, you just have power issues now." Raven said, taking a deep breath as she dropped her shield and took a step toward him.
"And that's something that I can help you with." She smiled at him just a bit.
"You're still my best friend you idiot. You're just a bit different looking now." Cyborg chimed in. Robin stepped forward and held out his hand.
"Come on Beastboy. I think it's time we sat down and talked about everything that's been happening to you."
So after months of trying, I finally finished this! I'm so proud of myself. I fight depression, and this is a battle in the right direction. I hope you guys liked it. I will try to come out with something else in the near future if I can.
