The cave that he and Victoire were hiding in stank of a strange cinnamon-smelling substance he'd never seen before. But Teddy wasn't about ready to let their pursuers find them. It was bad enough the whole planet was a desert here. But the fact that the heat was oppressive and made them both feel a sense of deliriousness didn't help much.
"Do you think they'll find us?" Vic asked, trying to keep on her feet. Teddy could see the amount of effort it was taking for her to do so. The heat was taking its toll on her and he could tell that they needed to find a cool place beside the mouth of this cave to shelter for the night.
"I don't know, Vic," Teddy told her, wishing that he'd brought along a water bottle or two or three. "I think they went back towards the strange city we left once we ran out towards the desert. They might have given up…."
The sounds of strange helicopter-like blades lashing air came from outside of the cave making Victoire jump a bit. She didn't cry out. That would lead their pursuers straight toward them. Which was the last thing either Teddy or Victoire wanted.
"I don't think they've given up the search," Vic said, looking towards the mouth of the cave as they slowly back into the glittering darkness. It felt much more cooler the farther back they went. "Is it just me or did the temperature drop a bit, Teddy?"
"It did get cooler," Teddy agreed, thanking whoever had given them the forethought to hide in this cave.
A cold prickling feeling went down Teddy's back. Sort of like the feeling he used to get at Hogwarts when one of the portraits was watching him. He looked around him slowly so as not to startle Victoire. That wouldn't help much if they were both on edge. One of them had to be clearheaded and think this thing through.
A strange shuffling gait from below the mouth of the cave. Someone was coming up here. They'd be found for sure and given over to those strange-looking trooper guys that had chased them out here, to begin with.
"Muad'Dib," a voice said almost too soft for Teddy to pick up on, "what do you think brought the Harkonnen slime out here?"
"I'm not sure, Stilgar," Muad'Dib answered, sounding like he was around Teddy and Victoire's age. "But I'm sure that the two off worlders in that cave over there would be able to answer that question for us."
Victoire looked over at Teddy her eyes wide with shock. Teddy was just as surprised as she was. How could this Muad'Dib know that they were here? They had moved a muscle or even taken a breath since hearing the approach of this Muad'Dib and Stilgar.
"If you are an enemy of the Harkonnens you have no need to fear us," the one called Stilgar called out.
"Who are they?" Victoire shouted back before Teddy could stop her.
"Come out and let us see who we are talking to and then I will answer your question, young one," Muad'Dib said, making Victoire roll her eyes.
Teddy couldn't help but let out a giggle that he had failed to stifle in time. He looked at Victoire who was looking at him in question. He nodded and moved forward. If these people were dangerous all he and Vic would have to do was pull their wands and fire a few spells off.
As they moved into the light of the cave's mouth they could see the two men clearly now. Or more like one man and boy about their own age. The strange blue-on-blue eyes of the man, Stilgar, went wide as he set them on Teddy and Victoire.
"These are Strangelings that have been talked about in the marketplace of Arrakeen," Stilgar said, pointing at Teddy and Victoire.
"We're strange?" Victoire said, putting her hands on her hips and tilting her head in an amazing imitation of her mother's face when the older Weasley was frustrated by something one of her children had done. "You have…."
"Every right to think that we're strange," Teddy said, interrupting Vic and gaining the same look she'd just turned on Stilgar and Muad'Dib. "My name is Teddy Lupin." He pointed towards Victoire, who looked rather affronted at being interrupted mid-chiding. "This is my girlfriend Victoire Weasley. You are right in assuming that we don't belong here. We don't even know how we got here, to be honest. Or for that fact who the Harkonnens are. We just know that people have been giving us strange looks ever since we stepped out of that strange plane thing."
The sound of strange helicopter blades was coming back in their direction. Which would have been fine if it wasn't for the look of dread that was on the faces of both Muad'Dib and Stilgar. They whispered amongst each in a strange language that neither Teddy nor Victoire had heard before.
"Stilgar, we can't just leave them here," Muad'Dib said, putting more authority into his voice than anyone their own age should have to give. "You can come with us but if you do you can never go back."
"Why?" Victoire asked, sounding more like she was letting out a breath she'd just taken instead of asking a question.
"Those men who hunt you are hunting us and our people as well," Muad'Dib said, his extremely blue eyes meeting both Teddy's and Victoire's. "They are very dangerous men and they will stop at nothing to find me and take what is mine."
"But what does that have to do with…." Victoire stopped talking the implications of what this dark-haired boy had just said settling in upon her. "You don't mean to say that they'd….that they'd kill Teddy and me to get to you, do you?"
"They'd kill Shaitan himself to get to Muad'Dib," Stilgar said, looking over his shoulder at the small black dot that was approaching from the distance to meet up with the closest sounding aircraft.
"We can't just stay here, Vic," Teddy said, shifting his eye color so that his eyes were the same as the two before them.
"But if we….we won't be able…."
"I know." Teddy put a comforting hand on Victoire's shoulder. "But it's better to be somewhere safe than to be…."
"Mum's going to be so angry," Victoire said, shaking her head sadly. "She asked us not to go too far and now look at us. I don't even think we're on Earth anymore, Teddy."
"Come," Stilagr said, steering them towards the back of the cave. "We'll explain when we reach our destination."
He looked back at Muad'Dib and said something in the strange language again. Teddy didn't need to know the language to know the implications of what was said. He knew from just the look on the older man's face. Stilgar thought that he, Teddy Lupin, and Victoire Weasley were trouble and he wasn't going to let anything happen to the people under his care.
Just as they were rounding the corner to where the cave became wider, Teddy felt someone shaking his shoulder. He looked over towards Victoire who looked back at him confusedly.
"Teddy," Victoire said, looking over her shoulder as she took in her strange surroundings. "Teddy, wake up!"
Teddy blinked his eyes open to the feeling of oppressive heat pounding down upon him. Was this a dream or was this reality? There was only one thing he knew for sure, and as he got up off the ground he took Victoire's hand in his own.
"I don't have time to explain," he said, looking towards the oncoming armored men from his dream. "But we have to run. I'll explain when we're safe."
As they ran, they heard the loud voice of an angry man shout out, "Catch them! Now!" Which was followed by the sounds of barking dogs. This was going to be a long day and hopefully, they'd make it through.
I hope you all enjoyed Magical Arrakis as much as I enjoyed writing it.
