Reincarnation Game (Book 1 - Highschool DxD)
Disclaimer: I do not own Highschool DxD.
Chapter 1: Into the Game
'Thinking'
"Talking"
"Talking"
- Unknown Location -
Dying was strange…
There was no truck-kun to take me into its violent embrace. No mysterious illness that gripped me and held sway over my life until I valiantly lost the fight. No bright energy or light coming to whisk me away. In fact, my death came while I was asleep.
Not very dramatic, I know.
So waking up in a standing position was definitely strange, but not nearly as strange as what I saw around me. Looking around, all I can see was an endless galaxy stretched out around me. Countless twinkling stars and fluorescent gas nebulae painting a beautiful sight, beyond that of anything within the capabilities of artists.
Its beauty leaves me speechless, which seemed like the perfect opportunity for something strange to happen.
[Congratulations!]
[You have been selected as the newest recipient of: The Gamer System]
Wait…
…the Gamer System? Why does that sound familia-…
"HOLY SHIT!" I yell out, my voice echoing out into the distant galaxy.
Anyone who's read as much fanfiction stories as I had, knew about the Gamer System. An all-powerful system that allows those chosen to become literal GODS and experience the infinite number of universes found in movies, books, anime, etc…
And now I was being chosen? Oh, fuck YES!
[Warning!]
[Due to previous issues regarding veteran Gamers interfering with new Gamers, the Gamer System has been changed.]
[Each Gamer now has their own separate System that cannot be entered, interfered with, or destroyed, by another Gamer.]
Okay, yeah…That makes sense. Some of the stories I read about had lots of crazy stuff happen because other Gamers were assholes and liked to mess around with weaker Gamers.
Last thing I want is some all-powerful dick screwing around with my new life, just for shits-and-giggles.
[Please select a starting Universe to begin…]
[The more Universes the Gamer explores, the more that will be added.]
That's good, I always get overwhelmed if there are too many choices for me to pick. Having it narrowed down for me makes this a lot easier. I pray that the choices aren't something ridiculous like Dark Souls, because that'd just be unfair.
Crossing my fingers, I silently pray for easier choices to get some practice in before I'm forced to fight godlike entities. Now let's see what I've got to choose from…
Universes:
Bleach
Fate
Naruto
Highschool DxD
Overlord
Huh…these suck. All of them are pretty bullshit in terms of overpowered characters running around. Except maybe Overlord...that is, if I get to be Ainz. Otherwise, I'm royally fucked.
Hmmm, obviously that one's too much risk. Same with Fate; I am NOT about to get one-shotted by fucking Gilgamesh!
So that just leaves Death Gods, OP Ninjas, and Dragon Gods…and only one of those has ecchi scenes with naked anime titties.
Gamer has selected:
Highschool DxD
What can I say? Priorities.
Plus, if a dumbass like Issei can become a Harem Emperor and defeat dragons, gods, and all kinds of supernatural beings…then I sure as shit must have a better chance.
[Gamer must now select their origin in the Universe…]
Origin? What the shit…no, don't start panicking yet. Let's see what it says first.
Origin:
Main Protagonist
Main Antagonist
Supporting Protagonist
Supporting Antagonist
Outsider
Phew. I was afraid it was gonna be something weird. Let's see…
No to the Antagonists. In Highschool DxD they all get their asses kicked, or even just straight-up die most of the time.
Main Protagonist has to be Issei, so…maybe?
Supporting Protagonist? Who would that be, Kiba? Eh, no thanks. Let's hold off on that one for now, I can always circle back if the others suck.
Hmm…I'm really curious to know what an Outsider is. And it gives me the chance to potentially keep out of the supernatural's sight until I can level up enough to not get my ass kicked. The story arc levels for enemy strength were utterly ridiculous; they went from a High-Class Devil who could throw fire around and regenerate, to a literal millennia-old Fallen Angel that took part in a war with the Biblical God and the original Lucifer.
Also, it would save me from having to make any excuses to potential friends and family members why I all of a sudden have a complete personality change. I was never the best at acting, so to pretend to love a family I didn't know sounded like a recipe for disaster.
Gamer has selected:
Outsider
Fuck it…Who dares, wins.
[Gamer has selected Outsider.]
[Therefore, Gamer must now create a character…]
Create a character? Let's gooo! None of those stupid hair-tails that Issei had sticking out of his neck for me!
A blank body suddenly appears in the middle of my cheering, with something akin to most of the character creation choices and sliders that you see in role-playing games.
First choice I made? Picking the body male. No way in hell am I going to enter an ecchi Universe as a woman. Not to mention I was a guy before I died, and I'm not about to lose my dick.
Surprisingly, the System never gave me some kind of time limit. Which worked out perfectly for me, as I was having fun fiddling around with every option it had. It took at least an hour as I tried out several different looks before settling on the one I wanted.
Going over the settings, I decided to give my new body short white hair. I always liked the look of it on characters I created; and after being a brunet in my previous life, I was ready for something more unique. Adding some gold eyes since I like how unique they look; I'm now finished with the head.
Next? Made myself taller than average.
Nothing crazy, but a good 5'8" seeing as the body looked to be around 15-16 and will likely keep growing. It's not as tall as I used to be (which was an annoying 6'0" at that age, 6'6" by the time I was 20) but it'll definitely make me one of the tallest for my age group. The musculature on the body sadly couldn't be changed, but that's not the worst. With all of the fighting and training I'll need to do; I should be ripped fairly quickly.
I almost giggled at the penis size changer. Adding a few inches to the groin, it was now a solid 8-inches. Some people might have gone for the 'Bitch-Breaker', but those people don't know that larger sizes are nowhere near as fun as it seems.
Try having sex with a short girl and you can't even pop the head in. Kills the mood very fast.
The Universe I'm about to enter may be ecchi, but even that has to have some limits. And I'm not about to take the chance and risk destroying a girl, just because I wanted a third leg. Harem protagonists might never get laid, but I sure as shit will.
Worst comes to worst, I figure out some sex magic and change its size.
[Gamer's body created.]
[Please choose a name…]
Name? Aw, shit. I'm terrible at names. And this takes place in Japan, right? What the hell is a Japanese name I can use that I even remember?
Madara? Fuck no. Too much respect for that badass to sully his name. Ichigo? No thanks, I'm not going be called a strawberry because people think they're funny. And highschoolers always think they're the funniest.
Wait…I just finished playing that samurai game a week or so before I died. What was the name of that character I loved playing as? Something Sakai, I think. That's a Japanese name, right? I'm sure it is.
Now for the first name…maybe something with an S?
…fuck, I've got nothing. "Help?"
Optional Names starting with 'S':
Shigeru (Luxuriant)
Shun (Speed)
Sora (Sky)
Saburō (Third Son)
I don't even know if I can pronounce any of these correctly, besides Sora…
Gamer has selected:
Sora Sakai
[Gamer must now choose the Time Period.]
Looks like I'm going to have to get used to being called Sora…that's definitely going to be weird. I was very much a white American in my previous life, and being called a Japanese name is quite the culture shift.
Now let's see where I can get dropped into…
Time Periods:
Season 1
Season 2
Season 3
Season 4
Well that's not very helpful.
I'll just play it safe on this, and go with Season 1. I'm not jumping into the middle of a war between God-like beings at Level 1. Because I just know that with my luck, it'll make me as weak as possible.
At least it'll give the Gamer System something to laugh at as I get curb-stomped by an enemy several times stronger.
Gamer has selected:
Season 1
Hopefully it places me somewhere before the main plot starts. I'm going to need all the extra time I can get to level up before things kick off. At least the first parts of the story aren't too crazy, the only real worry will be avoiding getting forced into a Peerage before I have time to figure everything out.
[Please review final choices…]
Okay…
Yep, looks good to me. And I really don't want to go back and redo all of this, the character creation was fun, but I'm pretty sure I've been here for over two hours now. Again, there's no time limit or anything being counted, but I'm starting to get a little bored.
[Review Complete!]
[Entering Universe: Highschool DxD…]
Here we go…
- Unknown Location -
I don't know why, but I expected something other than waking up in bed…maybe too much time play Skyrim. Ooooh, I can't wait to unlock Skyrim. I had way too much fun shouting enemies off cliffs and watching their bodies ragdoll while I tried to romance Aela and Serana. To be fair though, is there every really such a thing as too much fun when it comes to video games?
…Naaaah.
Groaning, I roll out of bed and look around at the new place I'm in. It seems I was put in a massive bedroom; with a regular sized comfy bed that barely fit my new body size, a large window looking out into backyard, and three doorways.
Walking over to the window, I see nothing but bamboo trees rising up and surrounding the outer walls that wrapped around the house.
So, I'm not in the city…damn. Now I'll have to walk who knows how long just to get food. The view itself is stunning at least.
Looking down at the backyard of the property, there's a small, beautiful garden with a small stream of water running through it. There's even a wooden bridge that lets you cross over the stream, with dozens of small plants and flowers all around adding a nice touch of color.
Having gotten my fill of the outside, I turn away from the window and try one of the doors.
Inside is a large Japanese style bathroom, with a large enough shower to fit multiple people in it. There's something about Japanese bathrooms that I always liked better than the American style, though the larger size was definitely an improvement. If I'm going for a harem, then I'll definitely be wanting to try out shower sex.
Looking at myself in the mirror, I shouldn't be surprised that I look exactly like the character I created, but I am. It's jarring going from looking a certain way your whole life, to looking like somebody else entirely.
Glancing at my clothes, I notice that I'm clad in a simple white t-shirt and boxers; which had me concerned that I'd have to walk around in this until I leveled up and purchased new clothing.
Worried, I step out of the bathroom and quickly checked the other two doors. One led out of the bedroom and into a hallway, while the other opened up into a massive walk-in closet. To my immediate relief, there were several sets of what look to be a school uniform inside; including a single pair of black jeans, and a black backpack.
Leaving the uniforms and backpack for now, I pull on the black jeans over my white boxers, reminding myself to get more clothes later. I am not doing the cliché school uniform look every day. It might look good on women, but for guys it just gets tacky after a while.
Satisfied that I'm at least somewhat presentable, my thoughts are interrupted by a new voice in my head.
Greetings!
'Um…what?' The voice sounded feminine, and a bit on the young side at that. I don't think it's a Sacred Gear, because I doubt I got that lucky.
I'm not a Sacred Gear, silly! My name is G.A.I.A!
It's short for:
Gamer Artificially Intelligent Assistant
'That's…nice. It's good to meet you Gaia, any chance you can tell me what's going on?'
Sure can!
Her bubbly, youthful voice is like a breath of fresh air compared to the silence of the obviously empty house and the monotony of listening to my own thoughts.
You see, every once in a while, someone gets picked to receive the Gamer System.
When that happens, they're given an assistant to help guide them through the Universes.
That's me!
I chuckle softly at her enthusiasm. Even if she sounds young, at least she's got spirit.
There's a lot of scary stuff out there, so I'm here to support you!
'That's…actually really great. Despite everything I've read about in stories and through playing video games, I doubt things are going to be easy, so having some help is wonderful. Thank you.'
No problem! It's why I'm here!
'Not to be rude, but I've noticed that you sound really young. Have you helped other Gamers before?'
Nope! I was created specifically to help you, and only you.
Aren't you lucky? :)
'I guess I am…' So, she and I are going through this for the first time together? I guess that isn't so bad. 'So Gaia, what's first?'
Well, as a Gamer you obviously have the Gamer System.
Which means you get Quests!
Quest Received:
[Learning The Game]
Objective: Learn how to access the Game Menu.
Reward: [?]
O-kay, the text box randomly appearing in front of me is going to take some getting used to. But it's fairly straight forward as far as quests go. Looking around, I notice a small note on top of a black journal that's now resting on the bed.
That wasn't there before…right?
Reading over the note, it's a short message with just two words written on it.
Say 'Menu'
"Menu?"
Blinking, I stare at the new text box that appears. These textboxes popping in and out of my sight better not become a common theme that happens every few minutes, because I'm going to be increasingly frustrated if it is.
Menu:
Status
Skills
Perks
Inventory
Relationships
Alright, that looks familiar. Let's start at the top. "Status."
Status:
Name: Sora Sakai
Level: 1
Race: Human
Rank: Normal
Title: None
Level 1? I knew it was going to do that. 'My luck really is terrible, Gaia.'
Sorry!
I tried to do something about it, but these things are hard-coded into the Game.
Grumbling, I try not to think too much about it as I move on to the other menu options. "Skills."
Skills:
[Observe] (Active) - Lvl. 1 (Novice)
Enables you to see information about a target.
Passive Skills:
[Gamers Mind] (Passive) - Lvl. MAX
Protects your mind from being read or manipulated.
[Language: Japanese] (Passive) - Lvl. MAX
Allows you to understand, speak, and write the language: Japanese.
So…I've got the standard [Observe], and the [Gamers Mind] but no [Gamers Body], and fluency in Japanese.
That's…really not good. I'm so weak right now, that someone could practically breathe on me and I'd die.
If nothing else, I believe in you!
'Thanks, Gaia.' Do I at least have any perks? "Perks."
Perks:
[Humanity] (Perk)
As a regular human, you are indistinguishable from all other humans.
You are completely ordinary to the senses of the supernatural.
-Warning- Perk is removed at Level 10.
A perk that protects me from being noticed for the first 10 levels? That's not terrible…Maybe I've got something to help me out? "Inventory."
Inventory:
…Empty…
…I'm starting to regret everything. "Relationships."
Relationships:
…None…
Of course…why would it be anything else?
It takes me longer than I'm proud to admit before I figured out how to close the Menu. I just had to think about closing it, and the textbox went away. Useful, but I wish I hadn't looked like an idiot trying to tell it to close while waving my hands over it.
It was a little funny.
Deep breaths, Sora…and again, I really need to get used to my new name. Otherwise, I'm going to look like an idiot when someone calls it out and I don't pay attention.
Glancing down at the journal, I give my new ability a try.
"[Observe]."
[Gamer's Manual] - (System Item)
Contains information regarding the Gamer System.
Not exactly an essay, but it gives me some idea of what's in it. There's actually a long list inside, with a useful explanation on how leveling works in this Universe.
Leveling is Restricted by Race:
Human (Normal): Level 1 - 100
Human (Sacred Gear User): Level 1 - 500
Angel: Level 1 - 500
Fallen: Level 1 - 500
Devil: Level 1 - 500
Yōkai: Level 1 - 500
God: Level 100 - 900
Dragon: Level 1 - 999
Well shit…I'm glad I didn't go with Issei, my level would have been capped at 500 as both a Devil and a Sacred Gear wielder. 'Why is that anyways, Gaia?'
The Biblical God created the Biblical Races and the Sacred Gears.
He didn't want any of them getting too strong and threatening him.
…he was a meanie.
'And the Yōkai?'
The Shino Gods followed his idea.
There's something about being a God that makes people meanies.
While I doubt I'll have to worry about the effects of Godhood any time in the near future; I do have to worry about that fact that, until I can figure out a way to change my race or get a Sacred Gear, I'm going to be stuck with a maximum level of 100.
Before I can continue that thought, another textbox appears.
Quest Completed!
[Learning The Game]
Reward:
Ability Unlocked - [Dungeon: Open]
[Dungeon: Open] (Active) - Lvl. MAX
Allows you to access the Dungeons.
So there are Dungeons too? Nice! I'll have to hold off on checking that out until I get a better idea of what's going on. For now, I need to figure out where the hell I am.
Yay! Exploration time!
'Heh, it's nice having you with me Gaia. This would get depressing fast if I was on my own.'
:D
Leaving the room, I finally get to explore the rest of the building.
It's a nice one-story Japanese house with an open courtyard in the front, and a small garden in the back. A large wall surrounds the perimeter of the grounds with a beautiful front gate made of thick wood that acts as the only point of entry. Painted all over the walls and hung from black cloth banners is the Sakai Clan symbol that I remembered from the game, Ghost of Tsushima; two white triangles overlapping to represent the Twin Mountains.
Rising up all around the outside of the walls, a massive bamboo forest blocks the house from being seen at a distance, and cutting me off from everything else beyond the walls. Thankfully, there was a single dirt road leading from the gate to a main street that disappeared off in the distance towards a city.
In the sky overhead, I can faintly spot a shimmer covering the entire estate, '[Observe]'.
[Gamer Home Barrier]
Protects the Gamer's Home from outward intrusion, attacks, and unregistered teleportation.
That is going to be extremely useful. Not having to deal with people constantly teleporting into my home unannounced saves me from so many headaches. And the protection against attacks means this is the perfect base to retreat to if something goes wrong.
Smiling, I walk back inside my new house as two more textboxes appear.
Quest Received:
[Attend School]
Objective: Attend your first day of school.
Reward: [?]
Quest Received:
[Finish the Tutorial]
Objective: Reach Level 10
Reward: [?]
Well shit, looks like I've got to get to school…'Um, what school do I go to?'
Kuoh Academy of course!
You can't be a Gamer if you hide away from the Game!
'I know…but still. It's Kuoh, Gaia! You know, the place where everything happens, and acts as the lynchpin that nearly causes a war between the Biblical Factions. The one under the control of two Devil Heiresses of the 72 Pillars and their peerages.'
S-Sorry…
Taking a deep breath, I let out a heavy sigh. 'No…it's okay. I shouldn't have taken it out on you Gaia, that wasn't fair. I'm the one that's sorry.'
It's okay, I know you didn't really mean it :)
Smiling at how nice my new companion/assistant is, I head back into my room to put on the uniform. It's a black blazer and pants, a white button-up shirt, and a…black ribbon for the collar? Why not a tie? Well, this is the same school that has the female students wear shoulder capes and corsets.
Not that I have anything against the corsets…they certainly enhance their features.
Grabbing the backpack in the closet that has a few blank notebooks inside of it, I look around to see if there's anything that'll get me to school faster, like a bike or a car…
…there's nothing.
Better start walking I guess.
It's a long, boring 20 minutes to make my way into town. I was fortunate that my paperwork to transfer into Kuoh Academy came with a map of the town, otherwise I'd have to stop and ask for directions every few minutes.
Reaching the outer gate to the school, I spot several students making their way inside while one of them stands there waiting. As I get closer, I realize who it is. '[Observe]'
Sona Sitri - Level 53 - Heiress of House Sitri
Devil - High Class
Affection: 0 | Obedience: 0
Level 53, huh. According to the manual I have stashed in my [Inventory], a Devil typically reaches High-Class at Level 50.
But the Affection and Obedience is definitely interesting. Those are usually found in Gamer stories with sex and lewdness in them…
Heh. Nice.
Are you thinking perverted thoughts?
'…yes, I am.'
Good! The Gamer System is meant for you to have fun with!
Sexy times are some of the best fun!
'You're absolutely right, Gaia. Sexy time are the best.'
Also, the continued use of [Observe] seems to have leveled it up a bit.
Leveled Up - Skills:
[Observe] (Active) - Lvl. 4 (Novice)
Your Skills will level the more they're used.
Some skills, like Observe, level faster when they're used on stronger targets.
Well, that's good to know. I can just spam the skill on everyone here and level it up quickly. Taking a quick glance at my stats, I frown.
Sora Sakai - Level 1
Human - Normal
'Gaia, why haven't I gained any levels for getting [Observe] up?'
You only level up from defeating opponents…
Figures…
"You must be Sora Sakai." Sona's stern voice calls out to me as I reach her. "I'm Souna Shitori, the Student Council President here at Kuoh Academy."
That had to be the worst fake name anyone has ever given themselves. I hope she doesn't actually expect anyone to fall for it.
Putting a smile on my face, I stick my hand out to shake hers. "Nice to meet you."
Affection Check - Have: 0 / Required: 5
Failed!
Instead of shaking it, she glances at the outstretched hand briefly before giving a slight bow.
Right…in Japan they bow. That's gonna be hard to get used to.
And I failed my first check. Which I have to admit is a little disappointing, but I've only just arrived in this new universe. Give me some time, and I'll get it right.
"I will be taking you through a quick tour of the school before showing you to your classroom. Follow me." She orders, not bothering to wait for my response as she turns to walk into the building.
Well that was rude.
Shrugging helplessly, I follow just a few steps behind her as she directs me through the school, spamming [Observe] on every person we pass along the way. Just because I can't get my own levels from it, doesn't mean I can't work on maxing out the skill. I've always had a completionist personality, and having every skill maxed out was one of the main things I always did in a video game.
The tour is quick, but professional. Sona showed me the pool, gym, cafeteria, the Student Council Office, and the Main Office. The only thing I didn't get to see was the Occult Research Clubhouse, which had a barrier around it not unlike the one around my house, only not as strong without the Gamer System powering it. Eventually, the tour ends with her directing me to where my new classroom is.
It's nearly time for class to start when we arrive, and before Sona can open the door, someone comes sprinting through the hall towards the classroom a few doors down from to it.
It's a boy my age, with spiky brown hair that comes out at the neck like two tails, and a wrinkled uniform that's unbuttoned; showing off an even more wrinkled red shirt underneath. '[Observe].'
Issei Hyoudou - Level 1
Human - Normal
Affection: 0 | Obedience: 0
I guess the Boosted Gear hasn't awakened yet since he still counts as a normal human.
Still…this is the future Red Dragon Emperor? Yikes.
You look a gazillion times better than him.
'Aww, thank you Gaia.' She's so nice, it's like having my own personal cheerleader supporting me.
Issei's appearance clearly does him no favors with Sona, who's voice turns from professional to cold as she calls out. "You were nearly late, Hyoudou. And I see your uniform is out of order…fix it, or that will be a detention!" Glaring at him from behind her glasses, Issei cowers at the look.
"O-Of course!" Trying to flatten out the wrinkles, he gives up the hopeless attempt in favor of scurrying past us into his classroom. His pale face glancing back in our direction before he disappears behind the door.
Turning back to me, Sona huffs, "You'll need to introduce yourself before the class begins. If you have any further questions, you can ask one of the Student Council members. Good day." Without waiting for my response, she briskly walks away.
That was rude.
She's a meanie.
Glancing through the open door at the classroom full of young teens, I mentally prepare myself to go through school all over again. Before I died, I had already graduated college and gotten my Bachelors. So having to redo high school was going to be a pain in the ass.
Walking to the front of the classroom, the teacher notices my presence and quickly quiets down the class before motioning for me to speak.
"Hello. My name is Sora Sakai…"
- END -
Author Notes:
And that's Chapter 1!
I want to give my respects to The Dark Wolf Shiro; his stories inspired me to not only get into writing, but to also create this series of stories.
The Reincarnation Game will follow the Gamer through multiple Universes. For those wondering, he will NOT be leaving the Universe until it is complete. Every new Universe will see him having to start over as someone new, and he'll have to work his way up each and every time. However, the more Universes he explores, the more gains he'll start off with every time.
Sometimes you have to scrap everything and start over. That's what I've had to do for this story.
Hope you all are liking it so far! Thanks for checking out my story.
