Note: Imagining Matt and the other Defenders already knew each other at the time Thanos happened

It started as a regular day. Matt and Foggy arrived early to prep for the days meetings and a court appearance in the afternoon. Karen showed up on time with coffee for all of them and their client showed up ten minutes late courtesy of New York traffic. A totally normal day.

Matt was half through explaining to their client, Mr. Thomas, how things were going to work, when he stopped mid-sentence and tilted his head. Something was wrong.

"Wh-what's happening?" he heard Mr. Thomas ask. The man's entire presence was changing, Matt could sense it. And then suddenly he was gone.

"What just…" Foggy stared in shock.

"Ah!" Matt cried out, collapsing out of his chair.

"Matt? Matty!" Foggy got on the floor with him. "Talk to me buddy, what's going on? Karen!"
Karen came running in.

"Matt? What happened?" she asked, "Where's Mr. Thomas?"

"He just vanished, turned to dust," Foggy said.

"The screaming," Matt clutched at his head. So much screaming, so much pain. He could hear everything, sense people's panic, sense people… vanishing.

"Something terrible is happening," Matt reached out his hands, grabbing Foggy with one hand. He reached out with the other, but just met air.

"Guys…" he heard Karen's voice and then she was gone too.

"No, no, Karen," Foggy cried. He held on to Matt tighter as if that would stop whatever this was.

The two men sat on the meeting room floor, clinging to each other as they waited for this – whatever this was – to be over. After what felt like forever, and with the two of them not turned to dust, they stood and walked out to the main part of their office.

Matt could still hear screams, mixed in with sirens. So many sirens.

Foggy's phone rang, and he grabbed it.

"Marci," he said, sighing with relief, "Oh thank god. I'm fine, yeah Matt's okay too. Karen… she's gone. She's just gone."

Matt reached out, clinging to Foggy's arm. He felt like he needed to do something, but he didn't know where to start.

"Someone's coming," he said suddenly, hearing footsteps thundering up the stairs. The door flew open, almost splintering right off the hinges.

"Damn you asshole for not answering your phone."

Matt suddenly found his arms full of Jessica Jones.

"It died, I'm sorry," he said lamely, wrapping his arms around her tightly. "How did you get here so fast?"

"I ran," she answered as though it were obvious, "We were just working on a case and talking and then… Trish and Malcolm both turned to dust. I called, but you didn't answer, so I came straight here."

"I'm sorry," he said again, but this time for more than just not answering the phone.

"Did you get in contact with anyone else?" Foggy asked.

"Not yet," she shook her head.

"I'll start calling," Foggy offered.

Before he could dial, they heard ringing.

"That's Karen's phone," Matt said. They didn't move and it stopped ringing.

"She's gone?" Jess guessed and Matt nodded sadly.

The phone started again.

Matt walked over and picked it up.

"Hello?" he held it to his ear, "Hello? Who is this?"

There was no answer, but Matt knew who would be calling Karen in the midst of this.

\ He was met with a dial tone.

"We need to call the others," Matt said and Foggy and Jess pulled out their phones.

Foggy's mother and brother were fine, but he was devastated to learn his father, sister, and all three of her children were gone.

Luke and Claire were both fine, as was Danny, but Colleen was gone too. Luke and Claire offered to go puck him up and then meet at Matt's place.

"I need to stop somewhere on the way," Matt said as they left the office.

Matt held Foggy's arm on one side and Jess' hand on the other as they entered the church.

"Matt, I see him," Foggy said, leading Matt up the centre aisle. "Father Lantom."

The priest turned and couldn't help but sigh with relief.

"Matthew," the older man said, "Franklin. Jessica. I am so glad to see you are alright."

"I wanted to check on you," Matt said, "We don't know what's happening, but I wanted to make sure…"

"I'm still standing," the old man patted his arm reassuringly, "Half the nuns are gone though, as are half the children in the orphanage."

"If you need anything, Father, please call," Matt said.

Father Lantom assured them he would, and they left again, heading to Matt's apartment.

The others were already there waiting for them. Marci hugged Foggy tightly when she saw him.

"What the hell is happening?" Claire asked, her arm wrapped comfortingly around Danny.

"Hell," Matt said, "Actual Hell."
