Chapter 1: On The Run

I ran as hard and as fast as I could do so. The sirens were close behind me. My loot tucked beneath my arm. I'd given birth not even a week ago and here I was running like hell.

I held on tightly to my stolen goods. It was just baby formula, a bottle, some clothes and diapers for my son. Being a homeless teenager meant that I couldn't afford these things on my own. I didn't like that I had to resort to stealing but I didn't have a choice. But apparently the New York Police Department thought differently. Maybe they believed my son didn't deserve to be fed or clothed or even diapered.

Hell they probably thought he'd be better off dead. My sister and I had been a thorn in the NYPD's side for the last ten years. We'd first become homeless at the age of seven. Since we first stole from that market ten years ago the police had been after us.

Elsa and I had always given them the slip though. It helped that we were identical twins. Or at least that's what everyone thought. My sister was actually a clone of myself. My adoptive parents were scientists. When I was very little my dad had purchased me off of the black market. That's a place where they sell children and babies that have been kidnapped.

I don't remember my life before I'd been kidnapped. But I do remember the guy that sold me to my new father. He was a cruel man that only cared about money. He sold me and so many others off like we were cattle.

Things got a little better when I moved in with my new family. That was when I discovered what my true purpose there was. My scientist parents had successfully cloned several animals. A dog, a cat, some mice...etc. Now they wanted to take what they had learned to clone the first human. However cloning humans wasn't exactly legal. That is why they purchased me on the black market instead of adopting a child through an agency. By using a stolen child as a guinea because then there would be no record of my existence. It was the perfect cover up.

A few days after they bought me they a sample of my DNA and made Elsa. She was born a few months later. Although I'm a few years older than her technically nobody could tell. She grew fast. Probably a side effect of the cloning.

Then our parents died in a car crash a few years later. Since we technically didn't exist my sister and I ended up on the streets. Life instantly became a hell of a lot harder.

We had to steal to survive. We hated it. I kept running until I tripped over something and fell flat on my face.

"Oh look at what we have here," a voice sneered. My heart skipped a beat. God how could I have been so stupid! "If I didn't know any better I would say that you were trying to avoid me,"

My voice got caught in my throat.

"Do you have what I asked you to give me days ago?" David's voice scared me.

He hit me hard. "I swear if you don't give me what I want tonight then I'm going to pay your sister and baby a little visit-"

"You stay away from them!"

He hit me again. "Why? I am that baby's father after all. I have a right to see my own son after all,"

Oh fuck. I should've known that he would use that against me. The only reason I ever had sex with a monster like him is because he had blackmailed me. He'd threaten to turn me into the police if I kept refusing him what he wanted.

It was either face years in jail or sleep with the bastard. So I slept with him...several times. Our agreement had been I have sex with him whenever and wherever he wanted. If I refused he'd turn me in. Well this union resulted in my son.

My son was the only good thing to come out of this. I loved my baby dearly and would give my life for him if I had to.

"Fine! I'll do it! Don't worry you'll have the drugs by tonight,"

"Good," he threw me back on the ground.

I hurried home once he left. If one could call a dumpster in a back alley home. Elsa was waiting for me. My son, who I'd named Dylan, was crying in her arms.

"Thanks," I said as I took my son into my arms. "Shh. It's okay baby," I rocked him gently.

"Nessie what happened?" She asked me.

"I ran into David again,"

She sighed. "What does he want you to do now?"

"Steal some medicine from the hospital for him so he could make his drugs of course,"

She sighed. "I wish there was something we could do about that bastard,"

I looked down at my son. I couldn't believe that such a cute, sweet, innocent baby could have a monster for a father.

"Are you going to do it?"

"It's not like I have a choice. He said he'd come pay you and Dylan a visit if I didn't,"

She didn't say anything. He'd done his fair share of torture to her as well. She slumped against the wall. A single tear streamed down her face.

"It's okay. We're going to get through this somehow,"

"Nessie we've been saying that for years. Nothing has changed except now we have a baby to take care of. At least there's always the slim possibility that you might find your family someday. But me..." I was surprised by the turn our conversation had taken. I knew she was a clone. She knew she was a clone. But this was a subject that we hadn't touched upon in years. As far as I was concerned she was my sister.

Yet I couldn't help but wonder how she felt. Maybe it bothered her more than she was letting on. I hugged her. "You're my sister and your Dylan's aunt. That's all that matters,"

"Yeah," she said.

My anxiety grew as night came. I couldn't put this off much longer. I knew where the hospital was. This was from being the first time that I robbed this place. I had to be quick because they'd be on to me soon.

I saw a pregnant woman walking into the hospital. How different her birthing experience would be compared to mine. I gave birth in a back alley behind a dumpster. I was in labor for ten hours with no one but my sister there to stand by and watch. The pain was excruciating.

I felt someone watching me as I entered the parking lot. I looked thinking that maybe it was security onto me already. But instead I saw a doctor with blond hair standing right next to a brand new Mercedes-Benz. His pale skin stood out just as much as his gold eyes. Gold eyes that would not stop looking at me. If I didn't know any better I'd say he froze like a statue. Shock covered his face.

I went in the hospital and headed straight for the pharmacy. I quickly grabbed the medicine that I was looking for. Then security spotted me. Aw crap.

I ran like hell again. Security chased after me. I could already hear them calling the police. The beautiful blond doctor was still standing there by his car when I ran out.

"Shit," I muttered when the medicine slipped from my arms. I couldn't go back to pick up what I dropped as I would get caught. Out of the corner of my eye I saw the doctor pick up the medicine. I could've sworn I saw him sniff it but maybe that was my imagination.

Thankfully security gave up on trying to catch me. Elsa looked worried when she saw me without my stolen goods. "What happened?"

"I dropped everything when security came after me. Fuck!" I shouted. "What the hell am I supposed to do now!"

"We'll think of something. Hopefully he won't come by tonight,"

I held Dylan in my protective arms. I had to do something to protect my baby boy.

"Damn someone is coming. Come on," Elsa pulled me into an abandoned nearby building. I could hear footsteps outside getting closer and closer. I was tol terrified to look. Oh God no. David was probably here looking for me.

Dylan scrunched up his little face. Oh no. Oh no. Please son don't start crying.

My baby began to cry loudly.
