Looking for an open door

"When one door closes, another opens. But we often look so regretfully upon the closed door that we don't see the one that has opened for us." - Alexander Graham Bell

"Joseph, please, slow down, the roads are wet."Angela cried as her husband recklessly drove down the mountain. The roads were indeed wet, and it was impossible to see anything within an inch in front of you. The rain was coming down so hard, and the screams of two young children could be heard from the back seat. He took a sharp turn and the children squeezed their eyes shut as the car rolled down the hill. My life flashed before my eyes as my little brother grabbed my arm. All I could see the fear on his face as I shut my eyes and blacked out. I awoke a week later in the hospital to find myself completely alone. I was the only survivor in a devastating car crash. I had lost the only things that meant the most in my life, my family. I lost something else too, my hope. Many of else may witness death during our life time, and it is how we handle it that matters. Most of us may focus so much on that door that closes, that we don't ever notice the door that opens before our very eyes. Some one once told me, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." Thank you.

Melanie stepped down from the podium as the crowd let out both cheers of happiness and tears of sorrow. High School was finally over, but it was only the beginning. She had her whole life in front of her, and what she did with it was up to her now. Melanie lived with her aunt and uncle and her cousins in a small house in Colorado. She had recently moved from New Jersey where she had grown up. She left behind so many memories of her past. She would never forget that dark and stormy night, for it changed her life forever.
