Behind The Scenes

If Jack had told Sam the truth, at the end of "Windows of Opportunity".

Disclaimer: The usual - Stargate's not mine, not making any money out of it etc.

Jack crossed his fingers behind his back and hoped for the best.

"So. What's everyone's plans for this week's Downtime then? Anyone wanna come fishing with me?"

As he'd expected, his fellow members of SG-1 mumbled words to the effect of, "No thanks" and tried to avoid his eyes.

"Aw, come on guys! It'll be fun! We'll relax with a few beers, catch a few fish and forget about the damn Goa'uld for a week. Daniel, what about you? Come fishing with me. Come on, you'll enjoy it."

"I'd love to Jack but I have a lot of reading to catch up on, translations to finish. You know how it is."

"What about you Teal'c? You're not doing anything this week, you could go with Jack, couldn't you?"

Even Sam, engrossed in something on her computer, looked up and winced in sympathy at the glare Daniel got from the big Jaffa.

"I cannot accompany you O'Neil."

"Why not?"

"I cannot."

"Why? What are you doing?"

Jack winced and inadvertently took a step back at the look on his friend's face and decided not to push it any further.

"Ok. You're busy. I get it. Carter, what about you?"

"I don't think so."

"Aw, come on Carter, don't tell me you're going to hide down here and work!"

"I really do have a lot of work to do Sir, and a whole stack of journals I've been meaning to read for weeks now. I'm swamped Sir, I'm sorry."

Jack frowned at this and sighed.

"Carter, what's a vacation for if not R'n'R? It can't be healthy to be stuck down here for a week with no sunlight and breathing all that dry, recycled and filtered air. Some good, fresh Minnesota air and a bit of sun would do you the world of good."

Like a predator sensing weakness in his prey, Jack closed in for the kill.

"You could bring some journals if you want, catch up on your reading on the drive then come back refreshed next week, ready to face anything the damn Goa'uld throw at us. Whadda ya say?"

Carter sighed.

"You might be right Sir, a little R'n'R would be good, as long as I can get some reading done. There's a really interesting looking article in The Journal of Applied."

Jack cut her off.

"That's great. You two sure you don't want to join us?"

The relieved look on Daniel's face disappeared when he realised he might not be off the hook as he'd thought.

"Uh, no, sorry, Jack. In fact, I should probably make a start just now."

Daniel slid off the desk where he'd been sitting and thought he'd best throw an olive branch Teal'c's way to make up for dropping him in it earlier.

"Uh, Teal'c, I just remembered, you were gonna come give me a hand with this, weren't you?"

Teal'c covered up his momentary confusion well. He didn't remember Daniel Jackson asking him for help earlier but the way the other man seemed to be moving his eyebrows suggested he was trying to give him a cue of some sort.

"Yes Daniel Jackson, and we should begin work immediately."

Jack followed them to the door of Sam's lab as they beat a hasty retreat.

"You're sure now? I mean we won't be leaving for a good few hours so if you change your minds."

Jack closed the door behind them and managed not to jump at Sam's voice from right behind him. He hadn't heard her leaving her desk.

"Think they were convinced?" she asked, as she slipped her arms around his waist and kissed the back of his neck.

"You nearly had me fooled." Jack replied, turning round to kiss her back.

"But finally we'll get the chance to be completely alone."
