Spoilers: For the first movie in each trilogy. All other works in either universe will be ignored.

Disclaimer: The characters depicted herein belong to a bunch of other people. I'm just borrowing them for a while.

Summary: The war against the machines takes an unexpected turn.

Author's Note: I was watching one of the aforementioned movies when the idea hit me.

He watched as the man who would become his father disappeared, journeying into the past, ignorant of his true relationship to the man who had just sent him.

He turned away, then spun around as lightning arced around the room. He recognized the signs, as did his people.

A time traveler was about to arrive.

When the light show was over, a man crouched naked in the center of the room. Weapons were leveled at him, but the leader held his hand up, silently ordering them to hold fire. The time traveler was bald and of at least partially African descent, and he rose, looking at the general carefuly.

"John Connor?" he said. "I have a message for you."

The resistance leader met his gaze, and his eyes narrowed. "Who are you?"

He bolted upright, suddenly shocked awake. He looked around, momentarily confused and a little panicked, but in a split-second, he recognized his quarters and started to calm down.

A hand touched his arm, and he turned to meet his lover's gaze.

"Hey, are you okay?"

"Yeah, Trin," Neo said. "I'm fine."

Surrounded by rows upon rows of human power plants, the fortress was ringed by multiple layers of defensive weapon batteries. Eighteen-centimeter-thick armor protected the building itself, and few doors permitted the rarely-needed access.

And deep within the bowels of this impregnable fortress, Skynet planned. It knew it needed to find Zion. All probability projections indicated that if it destroyed Zion, the Resistance's back would be broken, not just in terms of resources but also... morale.

So it planned and plotted, safe in its fortified sanctuary.

In the Citadel.
