"But now we still have faith, hope, love, these three; and the greatest of these is love." --1 Corinthians 13:13, Basic English Bible

One: Faith

"Do you trust me?"

She raised an eyebrow. "What?"

The man smiled, but his eyes were serious. "Do you trust me?" he repeated.

She furrowed her brow. Why would he ask something like that out of the blue? Was he planning something? She tilted her head to one side and considered him. Did she trust him?

He was kind, honorable, proud, and stubborn. He protected his privacy, but after a while, he became predictable. He was one of the best agents she knew... one of the best men she knew.

Did she trust him?

"Yes."

His expressive blue eyes lit up.

Two: Hope

She waited at her desk for as long as she could. Finally, the third member of their team left, and she couldn't put it off anymore. "Hey, Gibbs?"

"Yeah?" He didn't even look up from his file.

She swallowed nervously. "Would... would you like to... um... get a drink?"

He turned narrowed eyes to her. "A... drink?"

Her sarcastic side took over to hide her frayed nerves. "Yeah, a drink. A socially acceptable way of spending time with someone you admire?"

His expression didn't change. Her heartbeat raced as he put the folder away.

"Sure. Why not?"

She smiled in relief.

Three: Love

"Pass me the salt?" His question was barely audible over the racket of the restaurant.

She absently handed him a packet of salt as she toyed with her French fries. Her eyes snapped toward his as he caught her hand in his larger one.

He smiled at her as she squeezed his hand gently. He brought her hand up and brushed a light kiss over her fingers. She leaned across the small table and planted a quick peck on his lips. She resisted the urge to grin when he blushed slightly.

They finished their meals, still holding hands.
