Why She Kept Her Head Down

Chapter 20: The Happy Reunion

Before I begin I would like to mention something that was brought to my attention in several reviews. Apparently

I incorporated more than I thought of the movie "Enough", I didn't really mean to, sure it inspired me and I used

a couple of quotes from the movie, but I never copied word for word as some of the harsher reviewers put it. I only used a few elements from the movie such as: the power outage, metal detector, and the whole phone disruption thing, that's all I can think of that I intentionally put in the story, other than those two quotes. Thank you for your patience and now here it is, the reunion!

The next morning Kagome got up early to go visit Rei at the center. She was escorted by a police woman that was very nice, she had been there at the scene and comforted Kagome.

"So this guy trained you? He must be very good." The officer commented as she drove Kagome to the center.

"Well, I had some training before, but you're right. He is very good. He's my favorite teacher of all." Kagome smiled as she looked out of the window.

The car pulled up into the parking lot and the two entered the center.

"Rei! It's me, Kagome!" Kagome called out in hopes that he would hear her.

"Kagome! Kagome!" Rei ran over and picked Kagome up, twirled her around as he hugged her, then placed her back down on her feet.

"I'm so glad you're okay. I was really worried." He smiled down at Kagome, who beamed back up at him.

"I had a good teacher. Anyways, I just wanted to come and visit you before I left." Kagome grew saddened at the thought of never

seeing Rei again.

She owed so much to him after all, if not for him she would most likely be dead. She looked up to Rei, he was like a big brother to

her. Kagome didn't want to say goodbye to the only man she would view as family. Sure she saw her friends as family too, but a

different kind of family, Rei she saw as someone she could truly picture as her older brother.

"When will you be leaving?" Rei looked like he didn't want to say goodbye either.

"As soon as my mother is well enough to travel." Kagome answered as she looked down at her feet.

"Oh, wait a minute. I have something for you." Rei ran off for a few minutes and returned with a pair of gloves, the kind used in

kickboxing.

Kagome took the small black gloves and tears welled in her eyes as she reveled in the feel of them.

"Oh thank you!" She threw herself onto Rei and hugged him with all her might.

"Whoa girl! You trying 'ta hug me or squeeze me till I pop?" Rei laughed at Kagome's rough hug.

"Sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." Kagome let go and blushed at her childish actions.

"I was only joking Kagome, I don't mind if you hug me."

"Oh. Well, I guess I'd better get going. I need to go and see how my mother's doing." Kagome hesitantly said.

"Will you visit me every now and then so I'll know you're doing alright?" Rei asked.

"Yes, I will. I'll make Inuyasha come with me so you can meet him." Kagome smiled as she turned to leave.

Kagome and the officer, who was looking around the entire time the conversation took place, left the center and went to the

hospital where Kagome's mother was being held at. Soon they were at the hospital and Kagome was in her mother's room. The

doctor came in shortly after and Kagome asked about the condition of her mother.

"Well, she's doing much better than she was yesterday. She has several broken bones though, it'll take awhile for her to recover.

If you want to go home sooner, which I think would be better for your mother to be as far away from here as possible, then I

suggest having her air lifted to a hospital near your home." The doctor suggested.

"I'm not sure, can we do that?" Kagome looked at the police officer by her side.

"I don't see why not, it may be better for you both in the long run. Too many ties to the past are here for you two. We don't need your

mother waking up to find she's in the same place in which these horrible things happened to her."

"You're right." Kagome agreed.

"I'll talk to the chief about having your mother moved. Now let's go, the sooner we get to the station, the sooner we can make

preparations."

"Yes of course." Kagome followed the officer out of the hospital.

As it turned out the chief was on the same page as the officer was in terms of sending Kagome and her mother back home and was

already making preparations for the transfer when the pair arrived at the station.

"You're ready to go back home aren't you young lady?" The chief asked as he smiled at Kagome.

The tired looking old man seemed too gentle to be an officer of the law but something about his appearance put Kagome at ease. Perhaps

it was the wisdom his demeanor seemed to hold as he sat in his chair with his sat in front of him.

"Yes I am and thank you for everything you and your officers have done for me and my mother. We really appreciate all of your help."

She smiled back at the chief.

"No need to thank us for doing our job. Although it is appreciated to know that we're doing a good job. Now go and rest, you'll be leaving first

thing in the morning."

"Okay. Goodbye." Kagome rose from her seat and followed the female officer out.

"I guess you'll be glad to get back home tomorrow after everything you've been through huh?" The female officer asked, even though she knew

the answer very well.

"Well, yes and no. I'm nervous about seeing all of my friends again. Most of all though, I'm afraid of the questions they'll ask." Kagome looked

down as she walked.

"Understandable, it's not easy talking about something like that right after it happened. It took me years to talk about my experience."

Kagome looked up in shock. Had she heard right? Did this officer just admit that she had been raped too? She looked over at the woman

officer who's eyes looked unfocused. It was as if she were seeing ghosts from the past flashing by in her eyes. Seeing all the horrible things

that happened as if they were happening in that very moment. Kagome didn't know what to do. She didn't want to see the pain in the older woman's

eyes but she didn't want to touch her and set her off.

"Um...Officer..." Kagome tried to call her by her name but suddenly realized that she didn't know her name.

'Damn, why didn't I ask her what her name was before? Now I'll have to ask get her attention the hard way.'

Kagome gently shook the officer's arm in hopes of snapping her out of her terror filled flashbacks. It wasn't working though, so she shook her

arm harder and sighed in relief when the look of pain left the female officer's eyes.

"I'm sorry. I left you for a minute didn't I?" Kagome nodded in response to the woman's question.

"Officer umm..I'm sorry but I never got your name."

"It's Laya, Karen Laya. I'm sorry if I scared you Kagome. I thought I was over these flashbacks for the most part. I haven't had them for a long

time now. I guess you're situation reminded me of everything that happened." She gave a weak smile.

"It's okay, you don't have to talk about it if you don't want to." Kagome helped her into a chair and sat down next to her.

Karen shook her head and smiled.

"No, I've gone a long time without talking. I think it's time I talked with someone other than my family and shrink about it."

"...When did it happen?" Kagome asked hesitantly.

"Back when I was in 6th grade. It was only once but as you well know, that's all it takes to destroy a young girl's life. I wasn't able to sleep well

for many nights because that's when I would become a victim again. In my dreams I was powerless against him."

"So is that why you became a cop?"

"Yep. I became a cop so I could kick some bad guy ass." Karen stood and stretched as she waited for to follow her.

"I see." This was the only thing Kagome could think of saying.

Kagome thought of what Karen had told her for most of the night. She still couldn't believe it. The same thing had happened to her, but she didn't

look like something like that would. She looked so strong. Nothing like herself, who was too weak to fend off that man the after the first time he did

it. She grew angry with herself for not being stronger. She felt her eyes welling up, but refused to cry. Crying would do her no good now because

there was nothing left to cry for. Her mother was safe and getting better everyday, her step-father and step-brother were dead, and she would be

returning to the place that she could call home tomorrow. Yet, no matter how many times she told herself that she still wanted to cry. Why? She

wasn't sure. It felt as if this big burden had been lifted from her and that after so many nights of restless dreams, she could finally sleep.

'Yes, I can finally sleep now. No one will ever hurt me like that again...' Kagome's eyes drifted shut as sleep took over her system.

It didn't seem like he slept for very long because soon Karen was waking her from the dreamless slumber she was in telling her to get ready to

leave. Kagome rolled off her cot and dressed quickly in clothes that Karen had provided her with. Soon she was boarding the emergency

helicopter that held her mother on it and was off to the place they had referred to as home. The trip took a few hours that seemed to drag on as

Kagome drifted in and out of sleep. The trip wasn't a very comfortable one since Kagome didn't like the idea of being in a helicopter in the first

place. It was even harder for her to get any sleep with all the noise it was making. Kagome was jolted awake when the helicopter started to land

and cursed under her breath about never being able to sleep. Kagome's mother was quickly taken off of the helicopter and rushed into the hospital

to make sure everything was okay. Kagome just followed quietly as they placed her in a room and check her over to make sure everything was okay.

To Kagome's great relief the transfer didn't seem to affect her mother's health at all and Kagome soon decided to leave and see what her house

looked like now. She wasn't worried about not having a home because she knew Inuyasha wouldn't let anyone take away their home, but she

wondered if it was cleaned up. She certainly hoped it was, she didn't want to return to a blood stained house. Walking the familiar streets, Kagome

thought of Inuyasha and the others. They were probably worried sick about her since her last call, but she would visit them soon enough. Right

now she needed some time alone to think. Think about everything that transpired in this city. She briefly wondered what became if Kikyo, but to be

honest she didn't much care. Kikyo had done so many hateful things that she didn't deserve anymore of her time. Seeing her home come into view,

Kagome became extremely nervous. The closer she came the more she shook from fear of what sight she might find greeting her vision. Bravery

took over fear though, and soon she found herself in front of her door. She turned the knob opened the door, taking a deep breath Kagome walked

through the door of her house. Much to Kagome's relief the house was cleaned and there didn't seem to be anything out of place.

'Inuyasha probably had this place cleaned.' Kagome smiled softly.

Kagome went upstairs to her bathroom and showered.

"Ahh...I've missed my room so much. As well, as my own bathroom.." Kagome scrubbed her skin with a washcloth.

She dressed quickly and left for Inuyasha's house after finding her spare key to the house and locking up.

'Hmm...I wonder why the door wasn't locked in the first place. Anybody could've just walked in here and cleaned us out.' She frowned at this.

It didn't matter did it? Even if the door was locked it didn't matter. If somebody wanted to get into her house bad enough, they would find a

way. Just like... No, she wouldn't think about it anymore. She wasn't some weak little girl anymore, she knew what the real world was like and she

knew how hard it could be to live in it because that's what she was doing. She was living. That's all that mattered, wasn't it? Just being to live day to

with the people she loved. She knew it was. Kagome began to run to Inuyasha's house. She couldn't wait any longer. Waiting was all she had done

for months and she was tired of it. No longer would she wait to see him.

"I can't wait to see him. But what'll I say to him? It feels like forever since I've seen him."

Kagome finally slowed down her pace when Inuyasha's house came into view. Breathing hard she stopped in front of his gate and waited until her

breathing slowed down before she proceeded to go up to his door and ring the door bell. She waited for several seconds before she heard footsteps

clamoring down a staircase. Kagome giggled when she heard Inuyasha's shouts coming from the other side of the door. Containing her giggles she

left her mouth in a smirk and crossed her arms over her chest. The door swung open and an irritable Inuyasha emerged. He wasn't facing her yet,

for if he was he wouldn't let the next words slip from his lips.

"What the hell do you want!"

"Why nothing Inuyasha, I just wanted to let you know I'm still alive." The smirk never left her lips.

Inuyasha jerked his face towards the visitor and stood frozen in place when his eyes were greeted with Kagomes lilthe form.

"KAGOME!" Inuyasha yelled when his brain caught up with what his eyes were seeing.

He picked Kagome up and hugged her to his body as he spun around with her. He wasted no time in carrying her inside and set her down on the

love seat.

"How the hell are 'ya? I have worried sick about you! Me and the others have been thinking about you almost every second!"

"Really?" Kagome was a little shocked about this.

"Yeah, they wouldn't stop calling me. They kept asking if you had called saying you'd kicked those bastards' asses! So...what happened?"

Inuyasha finally calmed downed and suddenly looked intense.

Kagome told him of what went on while she was held captive, leaving some more private things out. For the most part though she told him everything.

Her story seemed to satisfy Inuyasha. As she finished he said nothing, simply leaned back and looked down as if absorbing the information she'd

told him.

"So, how's your mother?" He still hadn't looked up yet.

"She's doing better now. Recovering will be the hardest for her, but I know she can do it. She's a tough woman."

"Just like her daughter." Inuyasha smiled lightly.

Kagome looked up at him. He was looking at her with smile of admiration on his face. Kagome smiled right back.

"I missed you Kagome."

"I missed you too Inuyasha."

"I don't want us to be apart ever again."

"Oh? And what do you plan to do about it?" The smile never left her face.

"Guess I'll just have to make sure you never leave me again." He smirked.

He got down in front of Kagome, which made her lose her smile and replace it with a look of surprise.

"Kagome, will you marry me? I want us to get married as soon as we're out of high school."

Kagome sat for a moment. Had she heard right? She wasn't dreaming was she? She pinched herself to make sure, but nope it definitely

wasn't a dream. Did she want to marry Inuyasha though? Thinking back on how Inuyasha had always taken care of her it didn't take long

for her to make her decision.

"Yes!Of course I will!" She flew into Inuyasha's arms and kissed him.

This action surprise Inuyasha, but soon he found himself falling into the kiss. He had missed holding Kagome in his arms, but mostly he missed

her scent. Her smell always calmed him down. When she was gone it was hard for him to go though the day without smelling it. It was like he

was addicted to Kagome, for he often found his eye twitching and irritability took over him ever since she was taken from him. Thus the reason for

him being so pissed off earlier when he answered the door. He was so irritable that he didn't even smell her coming to his house, something

he could've done with his eyes closed several months earlier. Now all he wanted to do was smell her, touch her and most of all kiss her.

"I love you Kagome."

"I love you too Inuyasha."

Epilogue

As the years went by Inuyasha and Kagome soon married, after high school just as they had agreed upon. Kagome went to visit Rei as she promised she would. Of course Inuyasha insisted on going with her, just as she thought he would. So the pair ventured over to Rei's center for a friendly visit.

"Hello! Rei!" Kagome called out.

Rei walked out of his office upon hearing his name being called and was shocked to find Kagome standing before him.

"Kagome! Ha ha! How are 'ya girl!" He ran over and hugged Kagome, earning a growl from Inuyasha who stood behind her.

Kagome laughed when she heard Inuyasha's growl. He could be so over protective sometimes.

"Ha ha! Don't mind him. He's just very protective of me. Especially now that I'm pregnant."

"You're kidding! That's great! I can't believe it's been that long. Look how you've grown! Definitely not the same Kagome I remember seeing so

long ago. So what've you two been up to these days, besides the obvious." He smirked as he pointed to Kagome's small rounding belly.

Both blushed, immediately realizing what he was speaking of.

"Well, since both Inuyasha and I love fighting, both in and out of the ring we wanted to start a self defense school." She laughed upon mentioning

the fighting part.

"That's great! I'm sure you'll both do fine. You're half demon aren't you Inuyasha?" Rei couldn't help but ask.

"Yeah." Inuyasha didn't really care for the guy too much, but since he did help his Kagome out he wasn't gonna start hating on the guy now.

"I thought so, the ears are a dead give away. I'll bet you're strong, your build seems perfect for fighting."

'Hey, I'm beginning to like this guy.' Inuyasha smirked.

"Don't give him too many complement's it'll make his head get fatter." Kagome rolled her eyes.

"Hey!" Inuyasha jumped up behind Kagome.

"Take that back!" He began wrestling with Kagome, or at least it looked like he was.

He was really just hugging her from behind and rocking her from side to side. Kagome laughed at her husband's antics. Rei just smiled at the two.

"So how's your mother doing Kagome." He asked after waiting a few moments for the pair to calm down.

"Well, it took her awhile to get back on her feet but what can I say? The woman's strong and she wouldn't give up until she was back to normal

again, hell she's even better than before. I think her mind is finally at ease with my step-father and step-brother gone from this world." Kagome smiled

softly as she thought of her mother.

"What about your other friends? What happened to them, you still friends I hope?"

"Oh definitely. My friend Sango ended up marrying that hentai, Miroku. And Ayame married Koga, no surprise there. And Rin is still single. We

tried to hook her up with Inuyasha's older brother but they argued too much. So if you wanna meet her then come visit sometime, 'kay?" Kagome

winked at Rei as he blushed.

"Oh no! You're not gonna start interfering with people's love lives again. You screw them up too much." Inuyasha crossed his arms over his chest.

"Oh yeah? Well, I don't see our love in shambles and Sango and Miroku haven't come complaining yet. So there!" Kagome tossed her hair over

her shoulders as she closed her eyes and crossed her arms just like Inuyasha did.

Inuyasha smirked as he watched his wife. She was so head strong sometimes, but that's what he loved about her. She didn't take any shit. He caught

her in an embrace from behind and breathed into her hair, gathering her scent into his nose.

"Maybe our love isn't in shambles because of my big-" He started to whisper but was cut off when Kagome shrieked for him to shut up because they

were in public.

He just snickered as he released her from his hold. The trio talked for a little longer about times gone by and laughed about funny moments in their

lives. Soon it grew late though and the visiting pair was forced to leave.

"I enjoyed your visit. Don't be strangers now. I want to see the baby okay?" Rei smiled down at Kagome.

"Yes of course you'll see him! I promise we'll be back! Bye Rei." Kagome hugged him.

"Bye Rei, it was nice meeting 'ya." Inuyasha shook Rei's hand.

As the two walked out Inuyasha looked up at the sky.

"I guess it rained while we were in there. Look Kagome." Inuyasha smiled lightly.

"It's beautiful!" Kagome's gasped in delight.

Inuyasha took Kagome's hand and started walking towards their car as Kagome continued to look at the rainbow that loomed before them.

'Brighter days are coming straight for me.' Kagome smiled as she let her husband lead her to their car.
