Her morning run was one of the few times she had to be herself, not just Carter, S. PhD, Major, USAF. An air force officer would never be aloud to openly grieve for her CO. Ok; he wasn't dead, just frozen in ice under Antarctica, but he may as well have been.

No, Carter, S. PhD, Major, USAF had to stay focused, work through the mountain of data they had recovered from the legendary 'Lost City', find a way to turn it into a weapon to use against the Goa'uld.

But Samantha Carter, the woman behind the rank, behind the mystic, couldn't help but miss the man she'd fallen in love with. She hadn't intended to fall for her CO: at first she'd found his manor offensive, brash, sexist even. But over time she'd realised that it was a smokescreen, a defence he used to hide his true nature.

It had taken years for either of them to realise how they felt, even longer to not quite admit it to each other. They had both been dedicated to their careers, to the mission, but it had always been there in the background, waiting for the day when they could act upon it.

But they never had, and now it might be too late. She wished Janet was still alive: he friend had been the only person she'd ever confided in, the only person she trusted enough to keep the secret from those who would use it against them.

She rounded the last corner, heading back towards the house, amazed at how quickly the time had gone. She tried to do at lest 4-miles a day, sometimes more. A lot of people probably thought she was keeping in shape out of vanity, but really she needed to know that she could run like hell the next time they where ambushed on some other planet and needed to get back to the Stargate.

The sound of music from inside told her that Cassie was awake and about, probably getting ready for school. Sam stood at the bottom of the driveway, stretching to release some of the tension that had built up during the run. She looked at the sun as it hovered over the distant mountains, and repeated to herself the deal she'd made:
