All I Ever Wanted

It was cold, but that didn't matter. It was always cold there, in that lifeless land of shadow and despair. There was nothing, nobody to complain; only the rhythmic lapping of the waves against the beach. The lighthouse on the point ran from forever in the past to forever in the future, without stall or help. There time didn't exist. Without time, there can be no past, present, or future. There can be no memories to hurt or help; no actions to mistake or take joy in; no future to hope or dread for. The lethargic nothing enveloped the sands like fog in the hills on a quiet Sunday morning.

"Oh... where am I?" But when existence arrives, so must time. So must the past, present, and future. But having none of its own, the Dark Ocean could only know his. His losses, his fear of what he held, and the pain and torment he would cause. "Hello!?" The child called out into the emptiness. His plea seemed to echo from everywhere, with nothing to stop it.

I lie here, and wonder why
That I come alive, just before I have to hide

"I just wish that he was gone! Gone forever!" The memories began to rise again, with nothing to stop them either. So much space... so much... freedom.

"What!? No! I take it back! Sam!!!"

I believe I'm losing my nerve...
But could I ever do better than this?

"I'm sorry I made you go away! Please come back!"

"I can't be you! I don't want to be you! I hate you!"

"No I don't!" The voices were the same, yet so different. The child couldn't tell which he was yelling and which he was hearing anymore. Everything sounded so loud to him, yet they echoed on forever in perpetual silence.

"Why can't you take me for who I am? Why won't you believe in what I am, what I want!? I hate you both!" The voices screamed out against their parents.

Because all I ever wanted was a place to call my home
To shelter me when I am there and to miss me when I'm gone

The child began to cry. Why was everybody screaming? Why was he screaming? He clenched the thing he hated most as hard as he could as it began to glow.

"I want to go home!"

"You are home." The child looked up over the ocean, still lapping on as if nothing was happening. "Come home." The voice sounded so sweet, so inviting, so caring. He had to reach it.

All I ever wanted was a place to call my own
Where stars may dance and sun still shines and the storms feel free to roam.

The water splashed against him, but he didn't care. The child had to have it. The waves began to rise, moving faster. They crashed against him, but didn't even slow him the slightest. Finally, the child fell over in the water to his knees, holding himself up. "I want it to be mine! Mine!" The thing he held caught his eye as it began to change. Deep into the black waters he could see a much darker black form in his hand. "It's mine... all mine!" The child began to laugh hysterically as the echoes reverberated ever louder.

All I ever wanted was a place to call my own

"I bet you didn't think I could do it Sam! I've become better than you ever were!!!" The child screamed out, his voice changing from its sweet pleas to a harsh glee.

Where stars may dance and sun still shines...

"You hear that mom!? You hear me dad!? You tried to keep me like him but I'm better than that! I'm greater than all of you!" The echoes were deafening.

... and the storms feel free to roam.

Another wave crashed as a child laughed for what to the ocean seemed no reason at all. It didn't care, or have any need to care. The child finally calmed, like the ocean, forgetting his memories. He was all and everything. This place was his.

Time disappeared and the waves lapped on...
