You smiled

On the day my life was torn apart
I saw your eyes sparkle with glee
You smiled at me and it warmed my heart
And I felt at last that I was free
From these chains that bound me in the dark
I would break free and at last I'd be
Able to dust myself off and finally start
To live the life that was meant for me

You smiled

You never saw the danger coming near
You were blissfully oblivious to all
You never saw my growing fear
Never knew how quickly you would fall
But I saw Death here, and saw him sneer
Standing over you, black and tall
And the awful truth was painfully clear
In your crystalline eyes, beyond recall

You smiled

They ushered you into halls of white
Attempting to take you from the Reaper's grasp
The chains wrapped me in despite my fight
Snaked around my heart and snapped the clasp
And still you smiled, "It'll be all right,"
You tried to assure me in a breathless rasp
But I saw the truth in the harshest light
And my only reply was a hopeless gasp

You smiled

Even when the light began to fade
And even you knew your life was near the end
You smiled for me and lit the shade
Hoping for the ache in my heart to mend
But in the shadows, Death still stayed
And I saw his sadistic sneer again
And his touch could no longer be delayed
Not another moment would he lend

You smiled

Up till the last, you smiled for me
And tried to ease the pain within my heart
Ignoring yourself, you strived to be
The bind that kept me from falling apart
As they laid you to rest, I couldn't see
The tears don't stop flowing once they start
And since that day, I can't be free
Your death forever chained me in the dark

You smiled
A smile I can't forget

Your smile
Stayed with me till the end

I can't smile
This frown is forever set

My smile
Will never be seen again
