Title: Us, Here, Now

Sam/Jack, future ficlet, pg

She was lying on her back on the bed, on top of the covers, staring at the ceiling with a far-away look in her eyes. He lay next to her on his side, his head resting on his right arm, watching her.

She was telling him about her childhood. About the walking contradiction that she was – a tomboy, but a school geek. She told him about her mother, how her beautiful smile would light up her eyes, and that you could read every emotion she was feeling in them. He told her that she was the same and she smiled, proving this theory.

He told her about his childhood, and Charlie's. She'd noticed that recently his eyes were less guarded; he let her see far more. She turned on her side to face him as he remembered small, seemingly unimportant moments from his life and shared them with her. She returned the favor.

They remembered moments they'd shared together, good and bad, off-world and on. They joked that Teal'c had finally got close to acting more human than they did, just in time for him to return to Chulak. He'd just have to visit frequently so as to not forget his 'human side', as Jack put it.

They recalled all the close calls, the bedside vigils, the tears, the hugs, the kisses. They remembered their lives together, Sam saying that despite everything that had happened, she wouldn't have it any other way.

He reached out a hand to gently touch her cheek. She leaned into his touch, and they both smiled. It was real. And it was safe.

Because, finally, they could do this.
