In the Background

Sometimes he wonders whether he should acknowledge her childish adoration. Whether he should tell her how thankful he is to always see that flash of red at the corner of his eye or that tattered robe disappearing quickly around the corner. Or maybe he should tell her that he likes the way she looks at him shyly under her lashes when she thinks he isn't looking. Or perhaps that he finds the way she bites her bottom lip nervously adorable. Maybe he should just tell her that he notices her.

But then he realises that he always wants her there in the comforting background. Because if he said anything to her, that might change everything, and the thought of him losing her shy looks, her clumsy tailing, is unbearable.

So he continues to ignore her.
