Thin, Jagged Line
Author: Pumpkin Belly
A/N: Takes place in Season Three, after Cordelia finds Xander and Willow kissing. The song is God Will by Common Rotation.
"Cordy, please pick up. I know you're there. I just want to talk to you. We need to talk." Xander's voice sounded on the answering machine.Well who keeps on trusting you
When you've been cheating
"If you don't pick up I'm just going to keep calling." Xander said after a pause.
"OK, fine." Cordelia said into the phone as she picked it up, "What do you need?" Tears welled up in her eyes but she forced them back. Xander wasn't going to get to hear her cry.
"I just want to talk." Xander pleaded.
"Why? That's not going to make everything better, Xander." Cordelia said, trying her best to keep anger in her voice.
Spending your nights on the town
And who keeps on saying that he still wants youAfter you're through running round
"I just want to explain." Xander sighed.
"Save it, I've already heard it." Cordelia said.
"I love you Cordy." Xander announced.
"Not enough it seems." Cordelia said, her voice empty of emotion, "You cheated on me Xander. You know how much heat I got for going out with you. I lost all my friends."
"I know that," Xander interrupted, "It was a mistake."
Well God does but I don't
God will but I won'tThat's the difference between God and me
"It's not a mistake I'm willing to forgive." Cordelia said quietly, putting down the phone.
She carefully leaned over to the table sitting next to her bed and picked up the picture of her and Xander at the pier.
"Why did you have to do it?" She asked to no on in particular as she traced the lines of his face, remembering all the good times they had.
"I really did love you." She whispered.Well God does but I don't
God will but I won'tAnd that's the difference between God and me
The phone started ringing again and Cordelia brushed away the tears that were rolling down her face.
"Hello?" She asked into the phone, trying to sound happy.
"Cordy, please just," Xander started.
"Xander, please stop calling here." She said quietly, allowing the tears to run down her face.
"I just need you to hear this." Xander begged.
Well who keeps on loving you?
When you've been lying
You're saying things, as they seem
"I'm not ready to hear what ever excuse you're going to give me. I don't want to and I don't need to. You need me to hear it so you can feel better about yourself. Save it." Cordelia said.
"Is there a chance we can ever be they way we were?" Xander asked.
Cordelia paused. She was all ready to give a nasty retort when the picture she had been holding glared up at her from its spot on her lap.
And who keeps on trusting
You when you've been cheating
Saying things, as they seem
"You hurt me Xander. You betrayed me." Cordelia said.
"I know and I feel awful about it. If I could take it all back I would." Xander said.
"I trusted you. I loved you." She whispered.
God does but I don't
God will but I won'tAnd that's the different between God and me
"I don't think we ever can go back." Cordelia finally answered, "Please stop calling. Goodbye." And then she hung up.
The picture that had made her falter, that had reminded her of her love for Xander, lay on the ground next to Cordelia's bed. The glass frame cracked, separating Cordelia and Xander with a thin, jagged line.
God does but I don't
God will but I won't
And that's the difference between God and me
