Drop the Shields
Author's Notes: This takes place right after the most recent eppie of NCIS, the one that aired 14 December. This is my first NCIS fic, but I've written a lot of stories for JAG, so I'm no newbie to the fanfic world. Just a warning, this is Kibbs fluff!
Disclaimer: NCIS doesn't belong to me, but to the wonderful DPB!
Kate sat on her couch, watching the fire in her fireplace burn. It had been a stressful month, their last few cases had definitely tangled with her emotions. She had an afghan tightly wrapped around her, and she held onto a coffee mug tightly, despite the fact that she wasn't drinking it. She was startled out of her trance by a knock on her door.
She quirked her head to the side before it registered that she should go answer the door. She looked through the peephole, wondering who in the world was knocking on her door this late at night. 'Gibbs?' She thought to herself as she opened the door to her boss.
"Gibbs, what are you doing here?" She asked.
"Hello to you too Kate." He said, with that smug half grin that she had become so accustomed to. "Mind if I come in?"
Kate shook her head, opening the door further, allowing him to enter. "C'mon in." She looked curiously at Gibbs as he walked in, still trying to figure out why he was at her apartment this late at night. "What's up? New case…?" She trailed off as Gibbs turned around slowly.
"I've been thinking about what you said. About how I need to drop my shield for a few minutes." Gibbs said, looking her in the eye. "I've been thinking about it for a while now."
Kate was shocked. Jethro Gibbs, her boss, a hard ass former Marine, was actually showing signs of opening up. Afraid of ruining this breakthrough, she just nodded, encouraging him to go on.
"I was worried about Tony." He said simply. "But I would be worried about any of you if you were in the same position." He took a step closer to her. "Especially if it was you." He said softly.
Kate, at some point, realized that she probably looked like a fish out of water. But she didn't really care. He had done this before, teased her, taunted her, but she had never seen this look in his eyes before. His clear blue eyes looked deeply into hers, a fire burning in them. She gasped softly as he took another step towards her, as he brought their bodies into just a hint of contact.
"See, I can do it too Kate. I can let my shields down. And I think that I'm about to become very," He took another step that brought his body flush up against hers, "Very," He leaned down, just far enough so that he was about an inch away from her lips, "Happy." He murmured, brushing his lips against hers.
She grinned softly as she felt his lips move against hers, and as she melted into him. His arms came around her waist, holding her tightly to him. Her arms slithered up, wrapping around his neck, and pulling him down closer to her. They stayed like this, until both of their lungs all but screamed for oxygen.
They broke apart, and Gibbs cracked a soft smile, and brushed his thumb across Kate's swollen lips. "So was I right?" She asked quietly, looking up at him through her eyelashes. "Don't you feel happy?"
Gibbs just chuckled as he bent down for another kiss. "Oh yeah."
