Author's Notes:

Procrastination is so much fun! Mwahahahahahaha! -dodges rotten tomatoes and killer chipmunks of doom- Err... Yeah. This came to me while I was downloading some Saiyuki MP3s. For some reason. So yeah...

Warnings: OOC-ness, lack of descriptiveness, a crude attempt at an intellectual conversation. Set somewhere between episodes nine and ten. So yeah... -runs for dear life-

"You're late."

"And the retrieval mission?"

"I refused."

"Really? It was a nice enough offer, you know. Two million yen."

"You were listening?"

"Aa. You say that as though it were a bad thing."

"He accepted. He and that Midou Ban..."

"Midou-san seems like an interesting character."

"Define interesting."

"I don't know. There must be a reason Amano Ginji follows him around."

"Like a lovesick puppy?"

"Hn. You sound particularly... piqued."

"No. Intrigued would be the word I would prefer. Midou Ban... is different. I've been observing him since I tracked him and Ginji-san down but I am yet to figure out his motives."

"He is a man of many mysteries -- an enigma. A puzzle. A code waiting to be cracked."

"A challenge?"

"That too."

"It doesn't do well for one's sanity to begin to ponder the inner workings of his brain. You should know that."

"They accepted the mission, correct?"

"It's strange. Surely, Midou-san would've noticed something peculiar about their mission by now. It could be dangerous."

"You make it sound as if you care."

"Maybe. It's just... weird, I guess."

"Maybe they're just in it for the money. I wouldn't be surprised."

"Hmm... Probably. But it still would be an interesting case to watch, don't you think?"

"Do whatever you want. Just be careful."

"Next thing I know, you'd be the one following that snake around like a lovesick puppy."

"Your metaphors never cease to amuse me. You know Midou-san's not my type."

"Hn. Last time we talked, Kakei wasn't your type either but look..."

"That's quite different."

"Maybe. You don't like people you can't figure out."

"You know me too well."

"But this time..."

"I never knew you to be clairvoyant."

"I'm not. Just particularly observant."

"How do you mean?"

"Awareness is the first step, you know."

"To what?"

"To everything."

"And you're saying that my awareness of Midou-san may lead to something... more?"

"I take it back. You don't know me as much as I would've first believed. My only interest in Midou-san is that he's the first person I've met whom I could not understand. I just want to figure out what Ginji-san saw in him that made him leave Mugenjou all those years back."

"So you say. Just be careful you don't end up seeing him in the same light as Ginji had all those years back."

"Don't worry, I won't fall for the same trap."

"Midou Ban never is what one expects him to be."

"Aa. Thank you for the advice, Shido-kun, but that won't be necessary. I know what I want."

"I'll be going now. Good evening."

A tinkle of bells. A swish of cloth. An explosion far away.

A sigh.

"So you say, Ito no Kazuki. So you say."

The sound... of change.
