This is for Tin-sama, whose work, "A Convex Mirror", inspired this piece. Who, on that note, also inspires me.

There was something still very dark about him; and that could very well be the precise reason why she was drawn to him; Because dark begets dark, like inertia: nothing changes unless outside forces act upon them. He was, of course, always polite and proper—always, of course, with a witty anecdote to share, but she felt the ice underneath each letter of every word, as if he were holding back, but just barely.

And every day she challenged his sense of control, every day she attempted to break his barriers. Like Alice after dropping into the rabbit hole, she became curiouser and curiouser still, looking for the lock, searching for the key, scratching at the surface, chipping it away.

She was, however, unsure of what to do if she ever achieved her goal. And so, when her breakthrough came on a hot May day, when he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her into the shade, when he kissed her with a passion he now could not deny—her breath caught in her throat, her hands shook, and her eyes widened, closed, and she drowned.

"Why do you do this to me?" he asked, tormented, his hands still buried under waves of her hair.

"I want to be the first inside your heart," she said. "The first in, and the last one out. I want you to remember me forever."

He smiled crookedly, as if he was torn between a grin and a grimace. "I've lived a long time, Tomoyo-san," he whispered. "It feels like forever."

She nodded ever so slightly. "I know. Also that you may outlive me. Also that you may live many more lifetimes. Now, you will remember me. From the day you met me, from today, and ever after."

He buried his face on the spot where her neck met her shoulder, breathed her in. "You have always been in my heart, I think. Before I was born, you were there. You were the first one in. And you will be the last one out."
