"Captain, I must protest." Book stood in the middle of the cargo bay, bible in hand, "I am not sure that this is legal, let alone ethical or moral…"
"Oh, it's ethical and moral, and just as soon as you finish your part, it'll be legal too." Mal chambered a round into the shotgun he was holding, "Now you want this done in the face of God, or do you want me to do it? There's a long history of captains performing marriages, and it's perfectly legal."
"Captain, this isn't necessary…" Kaylee protested.
"This is my ship, and I say it is." Mal rested his gun on his shoulder, his other hand resting on his hip; "I'm all for 'it's your body and your choice', but no child born on this ship is going to be born out of wedlock. The two of you are going to take some reasonability for your actions. Ain't that right Doc?"
"Right…" Simon nodded slowly, still traumatised by being dragged from his bed by an enraged Captain Reynolds in the middle of the night and frogmarched in front of a bleary-eyed Shepard.
"Just because I'm pregnant don't mean we have to get married, especially not like this!" Kaylee looked round for support from the rest of the crew, "Zoë?"
"You keep me out of this!" The First Officer held up her hands defensively, "I learnt a long time ago that you can't change the Captains mind once it's made up."
"And I learnt not to argue with my wife." Wash admitted, "Anyway, marriage is fun."
"I have to agree with Kaylee." Inara took a step forward, "This is no way to start a marriage."
"This isn't open for discussion!" Mal looked round the room, then turned to Kaylee and Simon, "Ok, here's the deal: get married, here and now, or leave the ship next time we land."
"Captain!" Kaylee protested.
"I am not kidding! I don't care what the two of you get up to behind closed doors, but this affects everyone." Mal lowed he gun so it pointed at the deck, "You want to have this kid, that's fine by me. You want to bring it up on Serenity, that's also fine by me, but you will do so as man and wife or not al all!"
Silence descended on the room.
"Well?" Mal asked after a while.
Kaylee and Simon looked at each other for a moment, and then nodded.
"Good." Mal smiled, "Sheppard, do you thing."
"Very well." Book sighed, "Dearly beloved, we are gathered her today to whiteness the joining of this man and this woman in holy matrimony…"
Like said, this isn't a direct sequel to Alone at last, it's more of a 'what could happen next' story.
