Pet Trouble

"Nymphadora Tonks!"

Tonks winced at the sound of Molly Weasley's unusually shrill voice, and at the sound of her full name. "Yes, Molly?"

"How many times have I told you, 'don't bring animals into the house'?"

"Umm...seventeen?"

"I think it's been eighteen times," Sirius commented from another room. "Maybe nineteen."

Tonks rolled her eyes just as Remus Lupin walked into the living room at Number 12, Grimmauld Place. In one arm was a small calico kitten; the other hand held a saucer of milk from the kitchen. With a small grin, Remus handed both to the Metamorphmagus sitting on the couch. "I believe your 'charge' is hungry," he said softly, trying not to catch Molly's attention. Tonks threw him a grateful smile and took the saucer, setting it down on the coffee table. The kitten hopped out of Tonks' arms and slowly pranced toward the saucer, tail held high and tattered ears flicked forward. Remus turned to look at Tonks. "Why do you bring all these animals in, anyway?"

"Well, part of it is because I like taking care of them, since they're all strays," Tonks explained. "But it's mostly because I always killed my pets when I was a kid." Remus's eyes widened slightly, but Tonks hastily continued, "I don't mean I actually killed them; it's just that I wasn't very good at taking care of my pets. My mum is allergic to cats and dogs, so I was rather limited in my choices of pets. I could never keep a fish alive for more than a week, my rats always ran away, and I don't even want to go into what happened with my toad." Tonks crossed her eyes, as if reliving an unpleasant memory. "So this is sort of my way of making up for lost time."

Remus smiled and sat down on the sofa next to Tonks. "You've forgotten that you already have a pet."

Tonks wrinkled her face in confusion. "I do?"

"Yes. An intelligent, loyal wolf that appears once every month."

"And a loving, playful dog that appears at will," Sirius called.

This time, both Remus and Tonks rolled their eyes.
