The Empress' bodyguards threw him out the curtains and he landed at Anya's feet. She looked down at him, the tears in her eyes starting to show. Then he looked up at her and quickly stood up.
"It was all a lie, wasn't it?" She said in a low voice.
"No, no-" He saw the hurt in her eyes from hearing him recognised as a conman.
"You used me? I was just part of your con to get her money?" She started walking away.
"No, no, it's not like that! Well, maybe it was in the beginning, but now, everything's changed!"
"Oh, stop it!" She whirled around to face him. "From the very beginning, you lied!" She shoved him back. "And I not only believed you, I actually- aughh!" She threw up her arms in disgust and started walking away again.
He ran to catch up with her. "But, Anya, please! Remember when you spoke of hidden door opening in the wall, and the little boy, listen, that boy was-"
"No! I don't wanna hear about anything I said or remembered! You just leave me alone!"
He grabbed her left hand. "But you, you really are Anastasia! You are!"
She faced him again. "Don't you get it? I don't care if I'm the princess or not! All I ever wanted was a home and family! And you, you took advantage of that! Oh, how could I have ever trusted you?" Then she started to walk away again, but he still held her left hand. "Let go! I said, leave me alone!" She tried to yank away.
"But, Anya, I-" He was ready to do anything to help her, but he wasn't ready for what she did next. Her eyebrows narrowed and she slapped him, right across the side of his face. He felt it, but... didn't seem to care that it hurt. He loved her.
Anya was so upset that she couldn't look in his eyes. And she bowed her head. Then, looking down, she noticed, he was still holding her hand. But why?...
Suddenly, she was crying into his shirt, like she had on the boat. Dimitri realized how really betrayed she felt and he held close. "I'm sorry... I never, ever meant to hurt you... but Marie really is your grandmother... I guess you need time to think... you've been through so much..." His hands on her shoulders, he held her away from him. "Go to Sophie's house; you need... to rest."
She looked up at him, almost a smile, but the anger still within. The slight sarcasm in her voice showed it. "Yeah... whatever you say."
He let her go and she walked away, not looking back. When she had turned the corner (the argument had taken place in the opera hall), Dimitri fell back against the nearby wall, slid down, oblivious to the stares of the other people.
Soon Vlad came along, to the see how meeting had gone, the meeting he thought must've gone smoothly, but instead, he saw Dimitri, and asked what had happened. Dimitri just shook his head, stood up, and said: "I'll wait for you and Sophie outside."
And that he did, until he got the idea to drive Marie to Anya.
