As Naomi had graduated Commander Tuvok's academy program and was now an ensign, Miral had taken her place as the Captain's assistant. Miral had come to view the Captain as not only the boss of the ship, but as a mixture of surrogate aunt and teacher as well. It was in the latter two forms that the 6 year old came to the Captain one morning.
"What is a toDSaH?" Kathryn was surprised at the curse coming from the child.
"Where did you hear that?" The Captain patted the couch beside her in the ready room for Miral to sit, knowing she didn't really need to ask who said the epithet.
"SoSoy said Daddy was one." The girl answered innocently. Janeway was surprised again; she had heard that there had been an altercation in engineering which Seven and B'Elanna had evidently resolved after taking it into Torres' office. Kathryn had assumed B'Elanna, still fuming, had gone back to her quarters and ranted about the former drone in front of her daughter, who had picked up the word.
"Your daddy? Not Seven?"
"Daddy didn't come pick me up last night. SoSoy said he was d-runk." Kathryn grimaced as Miral continued. "Anyway, toDSaH sounds mean, and SoSoy likes Seven." The Captain raised an eyebrow, inviting her to continue. "Seven had a sleepover with SoSoy last night. I think they were playing hide and seek or something because they called each other's names a lot."
Kathryn was very nearly jumping out of her seat at this news. Even though Starfleet regulations were becoming looser and looser the longer they were away from home, as Captain, she wasn't as privy to all the ship's gossip as those lower in rank. But she was positive no one knew this! If Miral's report meant what she thought it meant, well, she had foreseen those two getting together for years, and recently bet on it. It meant she had won two hours of holodeck time from each of Chakotay, Tom, and Harry. But she wanted to be sure first...
"Miral, sweetie, did they say anything else?"
Miral had all but forgotten about her original question; the was delighted to have so much of her Captain's attention. "I was in the other room, and I was a-posed to be asleep, so I didn't hear much, but they growled a lot. Which was really funny because I didn't think Borgs growled!" She giggled. "And...' she looked at the ceiling, thinking, "SoSoy called her SochwI' and 'My beautiful Annika'. And there was a whole bunch of Klingon I didn't understand." Her eyes turned back to Kathryn's. "Did you know that Seven spoke Klingon?"
"No, I suppose I didn't." Kathryn said. Miral frowned suddenly. "What's wrong?"
"Hows come Seven gets to sleep over when she has to work in the morning? I can't on school nights!"
Kathryn grinned. "You know what? I'll have to talk to her about that!" She hopped up and nearly skipped out of the ready room, her mind already musing over which holoprogram to use first: "Vulcan Love Slave 3" or "Wrigley's Pleasure Planet". Coming on the bridge, she said, "I was right! Okay, boys. Pay up!"
And as the doors to the ready room began to close, only Tuvok could hear Miral's faint cry of, "But what does toDSaH mean?"
