Missing In Action

Something woke me from my sleep. Helicopter blades, it sounded like. I got out of my bed and walked over to my roommate's bed. I shook her awake. Her eyes twitched and opened. "What is it Sammy?" she asked tiredly. I saw her eyes dart over to the clock. "Geez, it better be good for waking me up at 2:20 in the morning." Killix was her name.

"Killix, I heard a helicopter," I replied.

"So?" she said.

"I have a bad feeling about it." Killix looked to me, then went back to sleep. I sighed. She wouldn't listen. But I needed to find out what was going on. I left my house, leaving my roommates alone, and wandered out into the streets of Barton Town. In the distance I could see a glimpse of the helicopter. On the side was a large 9. My eyes went wide. It was the 9 Action News Helicopter, and it was headed for Durem.

I've been a Von Helson Sister follower since I moved to Gaia, and I knew the Von Helsons lived in Durem. I felt something in the pit of my stomach.

"Hey, you seem to be missing something." I turned around and saw Killix standing in the doorway, holding my Anti-Gambino sign. I smiled at her. Killix tossed it to me and said, "Be back soon."

"Will, do," I replied, and I took off towards Durem.

Twenty minutes later, I was half asleep in the streets of Durem from exhaustion. My ears perked up and I heard many loud voices. I looked up to see hundreds of Gaians standing around and yelling and waving their Anti signs in the air. I walked over to one man who was waving his Anti-Gambino sign around proudly and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Whaddya want?" he snapped after turning around sharply.

"What-what's going on?" I asked.

The man pointed at the helicopter that was flying above their heads. "Lies, she's saying, lies! She's saying that the Von Helsons are dead, but that can't be true!"

"Huh?" I asked, tilting my head.

"She says that Gambino was shot, but then the tower on the Isle fell atop the Von Helsons' mansion! iNow/i she's saying that the Gambinos and Von Helsons are dead, but they're lies!"

"Maybe they are dead," I said.

"I don't care what you're thinking, but I'm telling you that she's saying lies! Spreading horrible rumors, she is…" I sighed and pushed myself through the crowd. I made my way to the front, and then I gasped. There was rubble from the Tower everywhere. I looked over towards the mansion, and it seemed that crazy man was right. The tower had fallen on top of the mansion. We waited there for hours, and the helicopter stayed put (until it ran out of gas and landed on the other side of Durem), but neither the Gambinos nor the Von Helsons appeared. It was then after 4 hours of waited that Cindy declared and confirmed it; Gino Gambino, Johnny Gambino, Marie Von Helson, and Anna Corinne Von Helson were dead.

I walked home slowly after that. My idols, the Von Helson Twins, were squished underneath that god damn Gambino's tower. But I couldn't help but feel a little sorry for Gino. He was so young. I smiled as I passed the Durem Reclamation Facility. I waved to some early-morning fishers, and they waved back.

A few minutes later, I opened the front door to my house. Every single one of my housemates were up and waiting for me. "Hey," Tracy greeted me. "We heard the news about Gambino and the Von Helsons."

"I'd rather you'd not talk about it," I said bitterly. Everyone could tell I was either tired or really pissed off. And trust me, I was really pissed.
