"I'm sorry," Edward said, and the apology was obvious in his eyes and the way he moved to kiss Roy softly. Roy jerked away from the lips, tugged against his bindings, found no escape.
"There's another way," he insisted, pleaded, trying not to look at Edward because he couldn't stand the intensity in the golden eyes.
Edward shook his head sadly and stroked Roy's cheek. "I'm sorry," he repeated. "If there was another way then I would take it."
He stepped away towards the edge of the circle and leaned down to fill in the last of the array. "My Father was a horrible person, but he was a genius as well. It takes a special offering to retrieve something from the Gate. You're a human sacrifice. You're the only one who can be used."
He shook his head and Roy could see the tears streaking his face, the desperation in his eyes. Despite his position, Roy still wanted to take the boy in his arms and kiss him until the pain went away.
"There must be another way," he said and maybe there would be if he could move his arms, reach his gloves. "I'll help you find one!"
"There isn't," Ed replied and clapped his hands, drawing them slowly down to the lines etched onto the floor. He paused for a moment, hands hovering threateningly above the array.
"Do you really want to become a murderer like your father?" Roy screamed, a last, desperate attempt to sway Edward's heart.
Ed just gave him a pained smile. "To save my brother, Roy. I would do anything."
He pressed his hands to the array and the world went white.
