Disclaimer: I don't own Batman, Superman/Shield, Supergirl/Batgirl, the Justice League, or anything else so far, no matter how much I've messed with it.

Author's Opening Notes: "Of Bats and Shields" picks up where "What If Batman and Superman Were Brothers?" leaves off, so I recommend you read that first.

"Of Bats and Shields"
'Part One: Four Fifty-Six'
By J.T. Magnus, "Turbo"

The early morning's always the hardest. It's when I sleep, when I'm weakest. It's when I can't stop the memories. I can still feel the heat as I pilot the first Watchtower back to Earth, on a crash course...

I've never hated my brother Clark, but that day I came closest. It would have been a good death, millions saved...

I know what he'd say, 'but not good enough.' I don't hate Clark. But I hate that he'd be right. The Thanagarian invasion was overt, open. The enemy we're facing now is quieter, more subtle in it's mechanations. That makes them more dangerous. I know... Their way is my own way.

Kara is sleeping. Not peacefully, not since she encountered Galatea, her clone. I can... understand... her fear. We don't kill. Ever. To say that Clark and I have never been tempted would be to lie, and Kara, Batgirl, was trained the same way. To know that there's a part of you that not only is willing to kill, but almost enjoys it...

I'm surprised she's sleeping.

I hate being superfluous, but if I tried to do anything now, I would be. Question's investigating from the information we have and Clark... Shield is... persuading... anyone who might know anything to come forward. There's nothing I can do at the moment and I hate it.

I hope Clark finds something soon, I'm ready to do anything besides wait. I could head up to the Watchtower and get a start on the day, but as much as I trust J'onn, I care to be around anyone who can go in peoples' minds less than usual after what happened to Kara.

The clock just clicked over to read four fifty-seven...

Project Cadmus... I wonder if the name means anything...

Author's Closing Notes: I debated it for sometime, there being three options, then chose to do it this way, continuing the storyline in a new story rather than nothing or continuing it in What If? Batman/Superman. A thank you to everyone who reviewed that story, and I'm hoping you'll stick around as I do my best to continue it. A word of warning though, I missed much of season three, so there'll likely be some inaccuracies until I reach the season four timeframe.
