Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter watched the man sign the usual papers. She was proud of this recruit, this had been one of her own, not a pass me on from the Pentagon. And the coup d'état was that she stole him right from under the nose of WorldEx Security while they were shaking hands with Homeworld Security in an effort to get him on the international team.
Sam wanted him in the mountain, and she got him.
There was only one thing that bothered her about it and that was his lack of curiosity.
"Mr. Damon, most people actually want to know why they've been recruited for a position like this," Sam threw out casually as she accepted the stack of signed papers. "You haven't asked once."
Marmaduke Damon looked up at her and considered her words. "Why was I recruited?"
Sam got the peculiar feeling that was asking just to appease her, but she answered anyway. "Because you graduated at the top of you class at MIT and you are reputed to be among the topmost talented securities specialists in the United States."
He grinned, his bright blue eyes sparkling. "You mean that you wanted me because I'm the best hacker out there?"
His confidence was charming, because it wasn't off-putting or arrogant in any way. Instead, he seemed almost amused by it. "Mr. Damon, you came well recommended as a 'securities specialist' because you are one of the best."
"Colonel Carter, I am the best."
"Well, let's hope that you live up to the confidence that you have."
Her statement didn't deflate him in the slightest, if anything it made him grin more broadly. "I didn't ask why I was here because I already knew. So, when do I get to see the stargate?"
Sam opened her mouth and snapped it shut as the full ramifications of his words set in. "You – how did – that's not even possible. The encryption codes alone are -- " Sam cut herself off and shook her head. "All right, Mr. Damon. You win. I'm impressed."
"I wasn't trying to impress you, Colonel Carter. I was just answering your question." He paused and grinned again, "Besides, I had to work here. There was no way I was going to WorldEx and Homeworld to work for my father."
