Spoilers: "All About Christmas Eve"
Luka's mouth dropped open in shock. His eyes immediately darted to Abby's lower abdomen. He could not tell if she was actually pregnant, but if Abby said she was, he believed her.
He did not know how to react. The last time his girlfriend mentioned she was pregnant, it had not ended well. Their reactions were completely different, and it ultimately led to their break-up. He did not know how Abby felt about it. Instead of speaking, he pulled her closer to him. She was pregnant. She had a baby. He should keep her warm.
He could see her breath in the cold Chicago air. He wrapped his arm around his shoulder. "Come on," he said as he started walking back towards the hospital. His car was not far. He got the feeling that Abby would prefer to go home as opposed to listening to the rest of the show.
It was Abby's turn to drop her mouth open in shock. "D-did you not hear what I just said?"
"I heard you," Luka said. "It's a little shocking…um…"
"Scary," Abby added as she looked up into his eyes. "I've never done this before, Luka. I chickened out the last time. This is just too much." Her initial fear was coming back to her. She could not just ignore it. "What are we supposed to do?"
"Hey, shh," Luka soothed her. He stopped walking and got in front of Abby. He pulled her into a hug. "You're going to be fine. We'll talk about this." He felt her body shaking within his hold. He could not tell if it was because she was cold, scared, or a combination of the two. The last one was most likely. "We'll work something out. It's going to be fine, Abby."
"No, it's not," Abby argued. "This child is going to be so screwed up." She glanced down at the ground. She could not Luka in the eye.
"Abby, it's going to be fine," Luka assured her. He lowered his head until he could meet her gaze. He picked up her head with his other hand. "Really."
Abby shook her head. "You can't know that. Half of my genes are bipolar and crazy. I don't even know about the other half."
"And look how wonderful you turned out," Luka rebutted as he continued walking. His arm was back around her shoulder. They were almost to the parking lot.
"Pfft, yea, I'm wonderful," Abby muttered in a disbelieving tone of voice. "Alcoholic, smoker, someone with too many problems."
"Recovered alcoholic, occasional smoker, but I have faith that you can quit, and I'm not Carter," Luka responded to each of her points. He rubbed her cheek gently. It was cold. He had to get her to the car. "You're perfect, Abby. This child is lucky to have you."
"But what if I can't stop smoking?" Abby asked as the fear returned to her voice. "I did a rotation in the NICU. Some of the patients where there longer than I was. I can't…" Small tears were filling in her eyes.
"Hey," Luka said again as he hugged her. "If you want to have the baby, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, if we get to it. For tonight, let's just go home and sleep on it. You'll feel better in the morning." He reached his car and opened the passenger door. Abby got in and sat down in the seat. Luka bent down and kissed her forehead. "Don't worry about this, Abby."
