Title: What's In A Name?
Summary: A dog is a man's best friend. But the woman is the one he should fear the most… Seplhie, Seifer, and Seifer's little canine friend.
"Awww, it's so cute! I never figured you to be such an animal lover, Seifer!" the sixteen-year-old made no effort to hide her delight and amazement as she beheld the golden canine, in the process of begging for attention from the blond man.
A grunt. "I'm not," he told her sourly, arms crossed and a stiff expression in place. "It just follows me around."
"Liar." There was amusement in her voice now, as she stroked the soft fur under its jaw. "You're just a big softie, no matter how much you try to hide it." Her brown bob did exactly that- bobbed- as she tilted her head to grin cheekily at him, and swung back to face the dog, now cooing sweet nothings at it as she tried to coax it over to her. It ignored Selphie- its attention was fixed on the man it had designated as its master.
There was silence for a few moments, then:
"How old is it?"
"Dunno. I think it's still a puppy."
"…Okay… is it a boy or a girl?"
"I don't know what it is, and it's either a bitch or a dog."
A horrified gasp. "You don't know?"
"No. I never really cared." Was Seifer's impatient retort.
There was a little grunt, and he turned to watch her, frowning. What he saw baffled him. The clumsy, green-eyed girl had sat herself on the dirt with a determined look, and was dragging the dog towards her- now she was rolling it over onto its back, using its think shaggy fur as handles- and next she was beaming brilliantly up at the scarred warrior. "It's a girl," she informed him triumphantly, placing the 'girl' between her legs and clambering to her feet. She brushed her navy skirt off meticulously, then grabbed the dog as she tried to make her way to her master and hefting her into her arms, effectively destroying her cleaning process. She nearly staggered under its considerable size, but made it the few feet to Seifer where she nearly dropped the dog, and rested her hands on her knees for a moment.
Selphie straightened, green eyes glittering as brightly as the salt water behind her. "It's a she," she told him with great dignity, "And her name is Lady."
"Wh- what?" he spluttered at her announcement. "You can't just expect to walk up to me and tell me-"
"Oh, I just did." She told him firmly. Lady, oblivious to the conversation, was sniffing at the base of a cluster of boulders. Hands planted firmly on her hips, the girl glanced at the dog and back at the surprised master. "Lady," she added with emphasis, and stalked off.
Well, that's it. A completely pointless drabble that sprang into my thoughts as I was putting my own puppy to bed. Enjoy it and review please! Isn't it weird? These are probably my two least favourite characters in FFVIII, and yet they're the first I write about in this fandom…
