Right Here Waiting

Summary: One warm spring day, as the petals fall from their branches, a voice cries out to lost love. "Whatever it takes, no matter how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…"

Take me to the place where we belong…

"Sasuke! I love you with all my heart!"

One year has passed…the cherry blossom petals falling from their branches, mixing with her hair. She brushed them away, reminiscing about then…and wondering about now.

"You really are annoying."

Naruto was gone too…he wanted to get stronger…he wanted to be able to take him down when they met again. This time, he swore, he will bring him back…back to her.

She stood still, in that one spot, here arms behind her back, her shining jewel eyes staring at the unreachable sky. No more crying, no more worrying; she was over that…after all…she wasted too much of her energy over that.

"Sakura…Thank you."

She sighed. What's the use? People are telling her to forget…to move on…to live life without wondering where that boy ran off to…

But she can't help it.

She needs to know.

"Thank you…"

"Sasuke…thank you for what?"

She is standing still…waiting for that day that he will walk through those village gates. There were those few moments where she would see a familiar face, but with a second glance, he was gone.

Sometimes we imagine seeing the person we need the most

One day, she got tired of waiting, and she locked herself in her room, never wanting to return to that place.

"I love you with all my heart!"

Even with all the resistance, she could not bring herself to do it. She came there, everyday, just to wait…

He is not coming back…you have to force him back.

Uchiha Sasuke…

The one I love.

Sakura sat still as the petals danced around her body, her pale green eyes staring at the ground. This bench, this very bench, this is where she woke up that night many days ago.

She can remember it clearly…the night she woke up…the way she felt…

"Sasuke…please come back to me…"

"Thank you."

Sakura brushed away the tears, the first tears she has shed in over a year…once again…this young girl felt lonely.

Another year has passed…another year of waiting for someone she knew that will never return.

"You're just hurting yourself…Sakura…stop waiting for him."

She couldn't help it. She will always wait for him…she knew that it hurt her so much to be waiting for so long.

She didn't care.

Sakura loved Sasuke too much to stop now.

Sakura walked causally around the village, her now long hair flowing behind her. This was how it was every springtime…

"Sasuke…where are you?"

"Why do you still love him?"

"I understand him."

"Why are you still waiting?"

"I know he will come back."

"He won't come back, and you know it; it's impossible to think that way."

"I love him, and if you love someone you believe in the impossible."

Sakura looked up, her emerald eyes sparkling. Cherry blossoms were falling all around her…one lone petal fell on her open palm, causing the girl to smile.

Poor petal, so weak, so fragile, so…so…

"Sakura, why are you doing this?"

Her smile faltered…

…no one knew why she was still waiting.

They thought her a fool for still standing there, at the same spot as always. Sakura did not care.

I will be right here waiting for you.

She inhaled deeply, a young woman of sixteen…a beautiful young woman…a single young woman of sixteen.

"Um…Miss Sakura…will you p-please gout w-with me?"

"I'm sorry…but I'm kind of…"

"S-sakura, do you have any plans tonight?"

"Not really, I'm kind of…"

Kind of what?

I'm kind of still waiting for him.

Sakura sat there again; the petals seemed to be falling more slowly this time. Another year, another spring has passed…

…how long can she keep this up?

"You really are annoying."

Sakura smiled contently to herself. Today…today was the last day for her. She knew it hurt to sit at that very bench, to wait at that very spot where he has left her…

"I love you with all my heart!"

She could still hear it…the voice that cried out to him…

"Sakura…thank you."

And the voice that never came back.

Whatever it takes, no matter how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…

Sakura walked with her friends around the familiar areas of Konohagakure.

This was a change for her, this springtime, this year; she was not waiting for him this time…

She was waiting for no one.

Right here waiting…

She told herself that over and over and over again…

I will be here always…

Sakura will not wait for Sasuke any longer…

I know you will come back to me…

I love him…

"Are you alright, Sakura?"

My heart breaks…

"Yeah, I'm fine! Don't worry about me, Ino."

I need you here with me…

Sakura will not wait for him; he will never come back…

I will be right here waiting for you.

…back to her.

Naruto grinned wider than usual.

Sakura smiled back at him.

After seven springs and seven years of waiting she gave up. Well, she did not really give up…she just took a break this year.

Or so to say.

"Sakura…thank you."

Here we see Sakura and the beaming Uzumaki Naruto – the groom to be.

"Sasuke! I love you with all my heart!"

"Thank you…for helping me…"

"No problem, Naruto! I'm glad to help you…"

These memories will never leave me.

"I can't wait, Sakura! In a few months time, I'm going to get married!"

Sakura grinned.

Falling cherry blossom petals…springtime.

Sakura waited during the spring.

Falling flakes of pure white snow…wintertime.

Sakura saw him during the winter.

The seventh year of waiting was almost over…winter was coming at last.

The cherry blossom trees were bare, the branches waving with the cool breeze.

"You really are annoying."

Sakura covered her ears, trying to put the cool voice that haunted her mind for almost seven years.

She cannot wait anymore…

…she felt burdened with the weight of an unrequited love.

"Thank you…"

Sakura clenched her eyes tightly, tears once again trying to leave her eyes.

"Forget about him, you have a whole life ahead of you."

She opened her eyes, the pale emerald color actually showing more life than it did before.

Sasuke…I'm waiting.

She looked ahead of her to see Naruto running up to her. "Naruto…"

"You're going to be late for the wedding! The wedding of the century!"

"I'm sorry, Naruto. Let me just get ready, okay?"

He nodded, pulling her arm towards her apartment, his smile bigger than the moon.

I'm sorry Sasuke…I can't wait anymore.

She combed her long pick, locks, the brush separating the tangles and knots. She had to look nice…she has a wedding to go to.

Sakura slipped on the light pink, satin dress that stopped at her ankles, tying the ribbons that acted as the straps to her dress.

She clipped on a simple necklace that consisted with nothing except a cherry blossom on a silver chain. A thin silver bracelet adorned her wrist.

I'm sorry…

Sakura shivered a bit at the cold air that hit her bare shoulders. She grabbed the off-white shawl from her closet and locked the door to her apartment as she closed the door behind her.

I can't wait for you…

After a few minutes, she entered the huge tent where the ceremony was to be held.

But maybe…you should learn to wait for me.

"Sakura where were you!"

She smiled sheepishly at Ino. The blonde grabbed the shawl from Sakura and pushed her gently on the chair.

"Stay still! I need to fix your hair and everything! We need to finish you up for the wedding!"

Whatever it takes, no matter how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…

Ino placed a wreath of winter roses on her head, and fastened a brooch to her dress.

This is my future…

"Perfect! Sakura, you look so hot!"

My future without you…

Sakura blushed. Ino did a number on her: flowers and make-up sure did make her look different.

Sasuke…this is my life…

Ino smirked. "I don't know what man would reject you! I'm so glad you're over him!"

I can't wait and live the life I had then…

Sakura nodded and blushed. Today was her day to shine.

I have to live with the life I have now.

Today was the day she would forget to wait for Uchiha Sasuke.

Young Sakura stared at him silently, her emerald eyes showing nothing but concern at the young raven haired boy in front of her.

"What are you doing here on the middle of the night?" Sasuke asked.

"Everyone that leaves Konoha will have to pass by this road…It's always this road here," she replied, looking down.

He shoved his hands in his pockets, giving her a small glance. "You should get back to bed."

Sakura just stood there in silence as he walked past her, his footsteps scraping the ground.

Sakura just stood there in silence as the footsteps began to get further from her ear's hearing reach.

Sakura just stood there in silence as the tears rolled down here cheeks.

She turned around and said to him, "I was always getting you angry…do you still remember?"

Sasuke stopped dead in his tracks.

Sakura gave a small smile. "This is the place where you first got mad at me, the very same day we were put into our genin teams."

Sakura looked down, the smile still playing her lips. She hid behind that smile…inside, she was screaming in agony.

He shifted uncomfortably, silence still between them. "I…don't remember that," he said.

She looked up at him, surprised at his answer, then looked back down…hurt by his words. She pushed that emotion away, the tears still lingering. She chuckled. "I thought so…it was such a long time ago. But even so, Kakashi-sensei, Naruto, you, and me have done so much together since then…"

Sasuke didn't move, he didn't even look at her. Sakura wanted him so badly to say something. She wanted desperately to make him stay.

"All of those memories…it made me happy."

She looked at him. "I know what happened to you, Sasuke, about your family…but revenge can't bring anyone happiness…it won't bring you happiness at all…"

"I am not like the rest of you," Sasuke said, never tuning to face her once. "We have different paths to walk on."

Sakura stared at him, the tears gone and the feeling of confusion washing over her.

"When Team Seven were completing missions together, I thought that was my path. But after everything that has happened to me, my heart tells me that I am an avenger. That is the reason for me living," he continued.

Sakura stared at him, long and hard, trying desperately to stop the tears that were falling once more. She couldn't take it anymore…

He turned his head sideways, "I will never be like you and Naruto."

'No more…please…no more…' Sakura thought, the water droplets falling faster and faster.

"Sasuke! Are you going to be alone again?" she cried out to him, "You were the one to tell me about the pain of loneliness! I feel that pain right now!" Sakura stopped herself, brushing away the uncontrollable tears that kept on falling from her emerald orbs. She calmed herself slightly and said quietly, "Even though I have my friends and family, without Sasuke…I will be…very…lonely…Sasuke…without you I would be very lonely!" she sobbed, as her heart tightened in her chest.

"These are just the steps we take to our own paths," Sasuke said, as he began walking away.

Sakura blinked back tears and saw his figure walking quietly away from her grasp. He was leaving her…Sasuke was leaving…if she doesn't do anything…Sakura would lose everything precious to her.

"Sasuke! I love you with all my heart!"

Sasuke stopped.

"If you were to stay with me you won't regret it! We'll live happily together…together we will build our happiness!" she cried out to him behind her tears. "I would do anything for you…so please…stay! I'm begging you!"

Sakura stood there, her small shoulders shuddering with each sob, her innocent tears hitting the stone floor.

"Please, Sasuke, stay here with me…but if you won't…then please, take me with you…take me…with you…" She looked up at him with her tear stricken face.

He was looking at her…

That very smirk on his face.

"You really are annoying."

Sasuke turned around, and began walking away from her.

"NO! Don't go!" she yelled at him, "If you go I will scream and everyone will here me! Sasuke don't…!"

He wasn't walking away from her…he was behind her. The young man she loved so much was standing behind her. She believed he has chosen to stay…oh, please stay…

The tears kept on falling.

"…thank you."

Everything went black.

'Sasuke…I know you will come back for me…'

Sakura stood tall and proud at the alter, seeing across from her the beaming Naruto. Next to him was Hyuga Neji; his best man.

"Sasuke would have been my best man; after all, he was my best friend."

Sakura clenched the bouquet of flowers tighter; this was supposed to be a happy moment…so why did it feel like it was crushing her heart in millions and millions of pieces?

Whatever it takes, no matter how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…

"Do you take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

Naruto looked at his blooming bride. "I do."

Sakura looked down. This was the moment Naruto has been dreaming of…and yet, she could not focus on it…her mind and heart was focused on one person…

Her one and only true love…

Uchiha Sasuke.

Sakura swallowed, what was she doing here? She was here to celebrate a marriage…she was here because her friend asked her to be here that day…she was here because she accepted…

Something inside of Sakura snapped. Something felt…odd. She suddenly felt…needed.

Someone was waiting for her.

She held her breath as the man presiding over the ceremony turned to the bride.

Someone was calling out to her.

"Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

She wanted to go towards that voice…

"I do."

but she couldn't.

Falling cherry blossom petals…springtime.

Sakura waited during the spring.

Falling flakes of pure white snow…wintertime.

Sakura saw him during the winter.

"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride."

Naruto turned to his wife and lifted the veil from her face. He leaned down and gave her a small, chaste kiss.

"Sasuke! I love you with all my heart!"

"Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you Uzumaki Naruto and Uzumaki Hinata!"

Cheers erupted from the crowd. Sakura smiled at her two best friends. She knew she shouldn't be there, but she was their Maid of Honor, she had to be there…even if her heart was telling her to leave.

"We'll live happily together…together we will build our happiness!"

Sakura looked followed the procession out of the huge tent to the building next door.

"You really are annoying."

She stopped short and looked up at the happily lit building. She wanted to walk in there, but…she could not…

"NO! Don't go!"

She lost her happiness over seven years ago…she felt empty and alone for those long, tormenting seven years…

Team seven was strong seven years ago.

Team seven was broken apart seven years ago.

Sasuke left Konohagakure seven years ago.

Sakura took one last look at the building and whispered, "I'm sorry, you guys…but I still love him…"

She walked away in the darkness…back to where she lost her love.

"Sakura…thank you."

Sakura's heels clicked against the stone, cold floor as she slowly walked to her waiting spot.

What am I doing here?

Ever since the wedding, Sakura has felt as if something – no, someone – was calling out to her…she needed to know who.

Sakura looked at the stone bench and a small squeak escaped her lips. There, standing next to the bench, was a tall figure. The figure wore a long black cloak, his raven hair covering his eyes. He looked at Sakura and gave out a long sigh. "I knew you'd come."

She looked at him curiously. "Who…are you?"

He shook her head. "I thought you would remember me…I thought you were the only one who would."

Sakura looked at him with teary emerald eyes.

It couldn't be…

It just couldn't be…

It couldn't be him…

Oh, it was him!

"Sasuke…?" she whispered, taking a step forward, a single tear escaping her hold.

His onyx orbs looked into her eyes, "Sakura…it's me…"

Sakura wanted to smile…but she couldn't. Instead she ran up to him and slapped him…hard.

I'm right here waiting for you…

"Uchiha Sasuke! Where the hell have you been? I've spent seven years of my life waiting for you to come back! Do you know how long seven years is? Everyday I would come back to this very spot and wait for you to come home…I've wasted my time thinking that you would suddenly come back in a couple months!" she yelled at him, furious tears streaking her face.

"Don't you 'Sakura' me! Years, Sasuke! Years! I have tried over, and over, and over again to tell myself that you have no part in my life whatsoever!"

Sakura stopped herself when she saw the hurt look in his eyes.

Why did you have to go?

"Sasuke…I…I mean…"

He shook his head and grabbed her wrist. "Go ahead, yell at me! Yell all you want! I don't care anymore! Just yell and walk away! I know that's what you want to do! All I ever did was make you cry! See! You're crying now! I made you wait for me! You didn't have to! But you did! Sakura…I know how mad you are at me for never coming back to you…I know how long you've waited…I know you hate me now…and…I'm sorry….for all I've done…"

Why are you sorry?

Sakura shook her head slowly and brought her lips to his. She pulled away and whispered, "No, I wanted to wait for you. I was hoping that you would come back to me so I waited. I wanted you to realize that you had someone back here still waiting for you…"

She looked up at him, her emerald eyes twinkling with joy, "Sasuke, I was right here waiting for you…waiting for you to come back to me…I didn't care how much it hurt! I did it because I wanted to…and I would only do that for that one person I love the most…Uchiha Sasuke…"

Sasuke wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace. "Sakura…thank you…"

Whatever it takes, no matter how my heart breaks, I will be right here waiting for you…

The End
