Just One Kiss
By DC Lady
SUMMARY: Spoiler warning just to be safe. Nothing major. This ficlet was inspired by Birds of Prey #90. Dick and Barbara discuss the kiss Black Canary gave Batman.
"And she kissed him." This was Barbara's fifth try at explaining the events leading to Black Canary kissing Batman.
"Just like that?" Dick was in denial. That must be it.
"Yep, just like that." She wheeled herself to the computer, hoping to get back to work but knowing that Dick wasn't about to let this go. She began to wonder if he would ever let it go.
"And what did he do?"
Barbara sighed. Nope. Just wouldn't let it go. "From what she told me later, he was surprised, but eventually kissed her back."
Dick rubbed his hand through his hair. "You know what this means, right?"
"I have absolutely no idea what you 'think' this means. It was just a harmless kiss stemming from the shock of Batman telling Huntress she did a good job—no, not good, I believe he used the word outstanding to describe the job she'd done. Heck if I was there, I would've kissed him for saying that too."
Dick turned to her, and she had to stifle a laugh at the look of shock that froze his features.
"Well, he does have the tall, dark, brooding thing going for him." She waggled her eyebrows.
His jaw dropped.
"I'm kidding! Sheesh. What's got you so worked up about Dinah kissing Batman, anyway?"
He paced. "I don't know. It's just out of nowhere, you know?"
Barbara held her tongue, and he must have noticed because he stopped pacing and faced her. "It is out of nowhere, isn't it, Babs?"
"Of course it is." She sounded unsure even to her own ears.
Dick leaned forward, placed both hands on either side of her wheelchair, facing her. "Spill it."
"It's nothing really."
"Then tell me."
"It's just…well since she'd finally gotten over Ollie…"
"Yes. Go on."
"She just seemed more interested in Bruce, is all."
Dick threw his hands in the air. "That's all? That's all? That's enough, Babs. You know what this means, don't you?"
Barbara rolled her eyes. "Why don't you explain it to me, FBW."
"It means that Black Canary could become my stepmother."
"Dick, don't you think you're jumping to conclusions just a bit? It was just one kiss."
"That's where it always starts." He plopped onto the overstuffed chair. "Can you really imagine the two of them together, Babs? Really?"
He turned to her with a sharp look. "Don't tell me."
"I just think they'd have fun together."
"Fun? Bruce doesn't do fun, remember?" He folded his arms.
Barbara rolled to where Dick sat in the chair, his legs dangling over the side. "Dick, think back. Remember the fun Batman and Robin had together. And when I came along and pushed my way into your little boys' only club, I don't know about you, but I had a blast."
He grinned and took her hand. "We did have some good times, didn't we?"
"And why do you think he never stopped you from telling those awful jokes on patrol, not to mention the horrible puns."
"Hey. Those jokes are classics."
Barbara just looked at him. "He was having fun, Dick. And somehow he's lost that part of himself. Would it be so bad if Dinah brought that back into his life?"
Dick sighed. "No. No, it wouldn't. I just don't want to see either one of them hurt."
"I know. Me either." Barbara shrugged. "Who knows? It was just one kiss."
