It has burned down;
How serene the flowers in their falling.
This is the poem written by the poet Hokushi, student of the great Basho. He had escaped his burning home with only his life. But, as fire consumed all he owned, by its light he saw the falling cherry blossoms.
Basho said that this was true poetry, to know the beauty of the flowers in such a moment and at such cost.
There was a girl, Mayura, with hair as pink as fresh budding blossoms and eyes as red as cherries. When that hair had faded to snow and those bright eyes had closed forever, this is the poem the fire god, Loki, eternal and unchanging,placed upon her grave.
