In Memory of Cedric Diggory

"Twenty-five years ago the Great Hall, if possible, looked even more spectacular. Giant ice sculptures stood and icicles hung from every surface. The Weird Sisters never sounded so good. It was perfect. Twenty-five years ago a man named Cedric Diggory walked through those doors."

She pointed towards the entrance to the Great Hall.

"Twenty-five years ago Cedric Diggory walked through those doors with Cho Chang as his date. Cedric Diggory was taking part in the Tri-Wizard Tournament along with Victor Krum, Fleur Delacour, and, my father, Harry Potter. This year this ball is to commemorate that final tournament. But when asked to give a speech I found Cedric Diggory was the only reason for me to be in front of you today.

"To you it may seem strange, to see me, a Gryffindor, wearing the Hufflepuff colors of black and yellow. I wear them for Cedric Diggory. Cedric was a fine competitor and a loyal friend. A bright student and an honorable man. He was well thought of by all. He entered his first task with the utmost of confidence knowing, thanks to Mr. Potter, what its perils entailed. A true friend to the end he returned the favor in Harry's time of need. Upon entering the maze of the third task he did a commendable job of reaching the cup along with Harry. They had done it. They were going to win. But an unexpected course of events took them to a forgotten grave yard. Forgotten by everyone but one man. Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort."

A tear came to her eye. She had once the witnessed the scene in her fathers pensive.

"His body was brought back to his parents by Harry Potter. So as you commemorate the memory of the Tri-Wizard Tournament and the last Yule Ball; I remember Cedric Diggory. My name is Lily Black Potter and the late Cedric Diggory was named my godfather."

Lily looked out at the sea of people. Cedric's parents sat in the back. Amos with his arms around his weeping wife. Harry and Ginny stared up at their daughter with immense pride. Fleur sat dabbing her eyes with a handkerchief wondering if this was to be a reunion of the tournament why she hadn't been mentioned more. Krum sat still and silent as a stone. He would never let anybody know how deeply he had been touched. The students stood bewildered. She had known they wouldn't understand. They were only here to party. The teachers all sat with their eyes wet knowing they had made the right choice when asking the creative Lily Potter to prepare this evenings speech.

"A moment of silence please, for my godfather, Cedric Diggory."

The adults fell silent immediately, but the whispers of her classmates resounded through the hall. Lily's eyes filled with tears because of their lack of respect. In these thirty seconds words were passed around of how weird Lily Potter was. Who would mention a dead man on such a glorious night?

"Thank-you." She murmured quietly with her eyes still closed. She lifted her long flowing black and yellow dress and stepped down. She walked around the edge of the room as the music started thumping and the girls screamed wildly. She soon found herself in the embrace of her father. He held her tight as she cried into his shoulder.

"Horrible, horrible people." She muttered over and over again.

He let her go and wrapped an arm around her as they walked over to the Diggory's. "Thank-you." Said Amos, pumping her hand. "We were so afraid that the ceremony wouldn't be right. Your speech was perfect."

"Thank-you." She whispered. "You're welcome."

Krum held up a goblet of butter beer. "In memory of Cedric Diggory." He said gravely.
