It was okay for Danny to have a crush on Paulina. After all, she was pretty and popular and confident and normal. The normal part was very important for Danny to remember. Sure, it was slightly unnormal for Paulina to have a not-so-secret crush on someone she thought was a ghost, and that kind of messed up the whole 'normal thing' a little bit, but she'd always turn away from her locker and smile that same smile that all pretty and popular and confident girls smiled.
It was okay for Danny to watch Paulina, too. Okay to watch her from a distance with all of her other admirers, her own little pack of overeager puppies that would die of happiness if Paulina graced them with even so much as a sincere smile. It was okay to watch her and like her because that was the sort of thing normal teenage boys did, thinking normal (if hormonal) thoughts and living normal lives. It was okay for Danny to try in his own awkward way to talk to Paulina, and it was even okay in its own awkward way for Paulina to tell him in no uncertain terms he wasn't even popular enough for a direct "No."
It was okay because it was normal.
It was okay because she wasn't the one he had nightmares about losing.
It was okay because she wasn't the one he would never be able to say goodbye to.
It was okay because she wasn't the one that fought along side him whenever she could.
It was okay because she wasn't Sam.
