Fitting

He called her Carter, she called him Sir. Ranks changed, teams changed, friends died and ascended, but that remained constant.

It was fitting, therefore, that the first time she questioned his judgement, she called him Sir. And that when he glared at her and pulled rank, he called her Carter.

It was fitting, therefore, that the first time he almost died, he called her Carter (except that he thinks he might have called her Sara at one point). And that she tried to comfort him, calling him Sir (except when she was pretending to be his wife).

It was fitting, therefore, that when she had to explain to him that the elephant in the room had become a problem that could get them both killed, she called him Sir. And that when he admitted to the machine and to her that he would rather die than lose her, he called her Carter.

It was fitting, therefore, that when they realized that the memory stamps had caused them to have a relationship, she pushed the whole subject back into the room and finished her sentence with an apologetic Sir. And when he agreed, he called her Carter.

It was fitting, therefore, that when she tried to tell him that she wasn't going to marry Pete if he didn't want her to, she called him Sir. And he broke her heart with a Carter as he introduced her to Kerri.

It was fitting, therefore, that when she thanked him for being there for him, she called him Sir. And when he argued with Kerri about her, he referred to her as Carter.

It was fitting, therefore, that the first time he showed up at her house with his heart in his hand and asked her to have dinner with him every night for the rest of their lives, he called her Carter. And when she said yes and pulled him to her, she whispered Sir against his lips as she kissed him.

It was fitting, therefore, that when they got married, she answered Yes Sir instead of I do. And in his vows, he called her Carter.

It was fitting, therefore, that the puppy she bought him for their first anniversary was named Sir. And that when she told him five minutes later that she was pregnant, he instantly dubbed the child Carter.

It was fitting.
