From the treetops he watched her every move. Holding his breath, never making a sound. One false move could send him tumbling into the sand and water below, scaring her away.

He studied her beauty. The cool evening breeze caused her red hair to blow about her face, and oh, how he longed to run his fingers through it. As he watched his princess sleep, he let his imagination run wild. The silver-haired teenager allowed his gaze fall to the inch or so of pale flesh her white tank top exposed. What a privilege to slide his hands across it. But no, it could never be. She only had eyes for that spiky-haired kid. And he loved her in return. It was only a matter of time until one of them made a move. Riku could never take her from Sora. He could never hurt his friend like that.

Or could he?

Her once peaceful face now wore a pained expression. Nightmares, he thought. She dug her fingers into the sand and let out a series of whimpers and moans, all of which made Riku's breath catch in his throat.

Maybe it's time I go, she'll be waking up any moment now.

Wishing he could save his beloved from the terror of her dreams, he began to climb down the tree. As he went to step on a branch, he lost his footing and fell to the sand below with a loud fmmp.

Her violet eyes shot open. "Whaa...? Riku, where did yo-"

He didn't move, keeping his eyes closed. She caught me. She'll think I'm some sort of...

"Riku! Are you alright?" she crawled over to him, placing a hand on his chest. His aquamarine eyes opened to meet hers, and all reservation was lost. He sat up, taking her hand in his, still locked in her gaze.

He took a breath and pressed his lips to hers.

She squeaked in surprise, but didn't pull away. His heart hammered as he moved his lips against hers. This isn't happening, he thought.

She was kissing him back.

He moved his tongue across her lower lip, and she met it with her own, allowing her hands to travel up the sides of his face and tangle in his hair. He slid his hands around her waist, pulling her small frame closer to him.

After a moment, she pulled away.

They stared at each other, both at a loss for words and breath.

"I love you, Kairi." he whispered.

She looked away. "Riku..I love..Sora."

She'll never love you, something inside him said.

"I'm so sorry, I..I am." After a moment of silence, she got to her feet and ran across the beach, no doubt to her home, as it was dark now that the sun had set. Riku watched her go and lowered his head in defeat.

You are undeserving, a voice told him.

Things on the island hadn't been the same since that night. The younger boy was somewhat oblivious to what had happened, and treated the silver-haired teenager the same as always, but the girl avoided him like the plague. She had stopped taking naps on the beach and taken to the privacy of her own bed.

Two figures strolled the beach at sunset, stopping at the dock and sitting. They discussed the day's events, which consisted mostly of constructing a raft.

Then the conversation took a strange turn.

"You know, Riku has changed." the girl murmured.

"What do you mean?" the boy questioned.

"You okay?" the boy asked, clearly confused.

"Sora, let's take the raft and go - just the two of us!"

The silver-haired boy watching from the treetops felt his heart split in two, and squeezed his eyes shut as the tears came.

The princess has fallen for her prince.
