When Sasuke asks, Sakura tells him that he was her first kiss.

That is actually a lie.

Sakura's first kiss had come when she was eleven years old, and it had come from Ino.

They had been playing, as girls do, imagining childish scenarios of rescue and seduction—princes and white horses and fairytale endings. They alternated roles after they had each played out their fantasies.

First Sakura would play the part of the handsome youth, stabbing bandits and fighting off warlords to reach Ino's side, then whispering various phrases learned from too many romance books and half heard conversations between adults in Ino's ear before carefully covering her mouth with her hand and kissing her own knuckles in mimicry of passion.

Then they would switch and it would be Sakura's turn to be rescued, to be swept off her feet by a pretend prince.

Sakura would often close her eyes and imagine it was Sasuke's arms holding her, and Sasuke's body above her, even as Ino's hair tickled her cheeks and smooth pink nails tapped against her lips.

But then one day, when it was Ino's turn to play prince, she forgot to cover Sakura's mouth with her hand before she plunged her lips down, and Sakura found herself receiving her first real kiss from her best friend. Her best girl friend.

Sakura may have made a noise of protest, but Ino didn't seem to hear it.

Her lips were warm and soft and slightly sticky from the lip glosses they had been trying on earlier, and Sakura found that she couldn't really pretend that this was Sasuke. Not with Ino's body so soft and smelling faintly like wildflowers, and not with Ino's lips gently pressing against her own.

Something fluttered in her stomach. Sakura broke away with a gasp.

Ino had immediately laughed and said "sorry" in that off-hand way that meant she wasn't really sorry at all. She poked at the blush on Sakura's cheeks with a mocking finger and stuck out her tongue.

"I must have forgot," Ino had said. "That didn't count, let's try the scene again."

But the problem was, that for Sakura, it did count. It counted a lot. It counted too much. And she loved Sasuke, didn't she? And she certainly wasn't…like that. Was she?

Sakura gave Ino back her ribbon, knowing she was burning bridges she didn't want to cross. It was just easier that way.

But Sakura can't tell Sasuke that Ino was her first kiss, even though she knows that he would take it as the same sort of thing as his accidental kiss with Naruto that day at the academy.

Because it isn't the same at all. And Sakura knows it.
