Pass the Ball

Ten seconds left on the clock…

I raced towards the end basket, dribbling the ball as fast as I could. Suou-sempai was keeping pace with me along the other side of the court.

Nine seconds left…

Asou-sempai faced off against me. He had been my coach, my idol, the boy I fell in love with and looked up to. I was on fire today. But Asou-sempai wasn't going to be the captain of the boys' basketball team for no reason. I twisted and turned, trying to find an opening in his guard.

Eight seconds…

Suou-sempai was waiting for my pass. We had practiced this move before. But I didn't want to do it. I wanted to face Asou-sempai by myself. For once, I had Asou-sempai's complete attention. I had seen how he looked at Suou-sempai. I knew.

But now, he was unaware of her. Focused on me, only me.

Seven seconds…

It was no good. The only reason why he was focused on me right now was because he was my opponent. If I wanted to win, there was only one thing to do. But if I did…

Pass the ball, Satsuki! I shouted to myself fiercely. Pass it!

Six…

I passed the ball to Suou-sempai. And watched as Asou-sempai shifted his gaze to her.

Five…

"Nice fake!" she cried out as she caught the ball. Asou shouted for Harima to stop her, but he was off marking someone else. I watched her streak up the court and sighed.

It hadn't been a fake.

Four…

"Somebody stop Suou!" Asou-sempai shouted, his whole attention riveted on the beautiful girl racing towards the basket. I, who was right beside him, had been completely forgotten.

Three…

"I won't let you!" Tougou-sempai cried out as he jumped up to block Suou-sempai's lay-up. Suou-sempai pulled the ball back in, and then did another lay-up in mid-air. A double-clutch. It was the first time I had ever seen it.

It was beautiful.

Two…

I ran up to the end zone and high-fived Suou-sempai. "You did it, Suou-sempai!" I congratulated her.

One…

"That was a great pass, Tawaraya!" she smiled at me. I could see Asou-sempai staring at her out of the corner of my eye.

Yes, it had been a great pass.

The whistle blew. The match had ended.
