She sighed, exasperated, as she continued to dig. Frowning, she picked up a brown banana peel, wrinkling her nose at the smell.

"It's got to be here somewhere" she said to no one in particular. The smell was becoming almost too much to bare. Her eyes were starting to water, and the hair that was normally bushy was now frizzy beyond control.

"What on earth are you doing Granger?" a voice came from above her, amusement underlying the serious question.

"Looking for my homework" she stated matter of factly.

"In the rubbish bin?"

Hermione glanced up to see Cedric Diggory standing at the bottom of the stairs, obviously trying to keep a straight face.

"Don't you have something better to be doing?" She asked, clearly not as amused as he was.

"No, I feel that this is the best thing to occupy my time at the moment."

"Well, I'm sorry to inform you, but I'm not your source of entertainment. If you're not going to be any use to me, bugger off."

"I might be of use to you if you tell me why you're digging through a rubbish bin to find your homework."

"I accidentally tossed it away when I was throwing in the last bit of my dinner on the way to my common room." She said, a slight blush rising to her cheeks. It really was a silly situation, and she cursed herself for being so stupid.

"So as opposed to redoing it, you're digging through day-old garbage to find it? That's too good Granger." Cedric said, finally giving in to his urge to laugh.

"I'm glad one of is amused". Hermione replied flatly as she continued to sift through papers and food. "Merlin, did everyone chose to use this rubbish bin tonight?"

"Here, let me help you." Cedric managed to get out between laughs. "Accio homework" he said, pointing his wand at the bin. A piece of paper quickly flew into his hand, much to Hermione's embarrassment.

She opened and closed her mouth several times, as if to speak, but no words were coming out.

"A simple "thank you" would be nice." Cedric said, handing her the messy scroll. "Oh, and you might want to clean that up." He remarked with a grin.

She still didn't say a word.

"What, cat got your tongue Granger?"

"If I weren't so bloody annoyed with your arrogance right now, I could kiss you." She said without thinking. Her hand flew up to her mouth, as if trying to get the words back in to where they came from.

"What was that? You could kiss me? I might not be too opposed to that idea." Grey-blue eyes lighting up as he smiled.

If possible, Hermione turned a shade of red that rivaled Ron's hair.

"I… I mean… curses."

"It's alright Hermione most girls aren't able to resist the Diggory charm." He said with a grin.

"Oh come off it. I am perfectly able to…" She started, but was silenced by his lips suddenly upon her own. At that moment, her brain completely ceased to think coherent thoughts. The mucky scroll that had been clutched in her left hand fell to the ground as her mind drifted off to far better places.

When they broke the kiss, they both just stared, the smell of the rubbish forgotten, as well as the homework she had previously been looking for.

"Well then." Cedric said, breaking the silence.

"Thank you?" Hermione suddenly said.

"Excuse me?"

"I mean, thank you for finding my homework."

"Oh, well, if that's how you thank me, I do believe you should lose your homework more often." He said. With a smile and a wink, he turned around and made his way back up the stairs, leaving her standing at the base of them, frizzy hair framing her heart shaped face.
