April 1981

The orange glow of the streetlamps cast patches of dim light across the ceiling of the tiny flat's sole bedroom. Occasionally the white and red of a car's headlights would dance across the cracked plaster, sending reflected shadows scampering across the bed below…in which two lovers slept; one pale and one darker, one light-haired and one black, both content in each other's arms. The war was at the height of its violence, and such a moment of peace was rare.

Or not exactly peace. Because one was awake, a worried gaze following the light that raced intermittently above. It was plain that he would not sleep until his mind was set at ease.

"Moony?" he said eventually.

"Mphg…wha'?" replied his dazed lover, waking with a start; "Ugh, Siri, it's four in the morning, and I…uh, are you okay?"

"I've been thinking," Sirius said, propping himself up on one elbow.

Remus resisted the urge to make a sarcastic remark about the rarity of the occasion and simply replied; "What about?"

"Well, you know this mor- sorry, yesterday, we took down that Death Eater safehouse, and Avery tried to curse me…?"

Remus frowned; he had been unable to join the Aurors like Sirius and James because of his…condition…but he heard stories. If Fabian Prewitt was a reliable witness, then Sirius had been hit full in the chest with a curse that should have killed him. Luckily Avery was a complete incompetent, and the curse had only knocked him out and given him a few injuries that Poppy Pomfrey had patched up in moments.

"Of course I know – I was worried sick, you could have been killed, Sirius…"

"Well, that's what I was thinking about," Sirius took a deep breath; "I want you to promise me something."

"What?" Remus replied, a little suspiciously.

"If something happens to me…if I get killed or whatever…I want you to promise me there'll be someone else."

"What!"

"I don't want you to be alone…please just promise me that you won't waste your life being lonely because of me."

Remus stared in open-mouthed silence for what seemed like hours…this was not a good discussion to be having at four in the morning. Even with his naturally pessimistic outlook, he had never really believed that they wouldn't make it out alive. And yet here was Sirius, by far the most thoughtless of them, the one last likely to consider the future, asking this of him. He shut his eyes.

"I…I promise."

"Good," Sirius said as if all problems had been instantly solved. He wrapped his arms around the dazed werewolf and pressed a soft kiss against his lips. They fell asleep in each others' arms, savouring their own moment of peace in the midst of the war.

June 1997

Tonks was looking up at him with hope in her eyes…eyes so much like her cousin's, the deep grey-blue of the sky before a storm. Remus wondered if that could possibly be a coincidence.

He didn't really love her, and he wasn't sure if he ever would. But she was sweet and kind and not afraid of him even though she knew what he was. He certainly did care about her, and maybe for the time being that was enough…he could try, for her sake.

And for the sake of a promise made long ago.
