A/N: It's 3:00 am. I'm tired, yes, but I just don't wanna go to sleep… and I've had this fic nagging at me for a few days now… so I figured I'd write it. Remus/Tonks oneshot, post HPB.

Keys to the Heart

When she thought about it, she suspected it was the reason she first fell in love with him. At the time she was six years old. It wasn't really love then, but it was the closest that a six-year-old could get.

Back then he would come to her house and practice. His family was too poor to own a piano, but somehow he had learned and whenever he visited them he would gaze longingly at their baby grand until her mother smiled and said, "Remus, won't you play for us?"

But then her cousin went to jail and Remus didn't visit any more.

She still loved to hear the piano- her father and mother both played well enough and Nymphadora would laugh and dance whenever they decided to pick out a tune. But she missed the way Remus played- melodic and beautiful and unsurpassed by anyone else.

Now Sirius was dead and Dumbledore was gone and they were in the middle of a terrible, bloody, dangerous war. But she had told Harry about Remus' love of the ivories and Harry had salvaged an ancient grand piano from one of the rooms in Grimmauld Place and given it to Remus that Christmas.

And he was playing again. He was a little rusty at first, yes, but she didn't care. His music stirred up memories of a time when war was something the grown ups talked about and nothing invaded her world of dolls and toys and music. It was comforting.

She sighed softly from the doorway to the room where he was playing. It was a sad song, one she didn't know the name to but recognized as one of his favorites. It was one of her favorites, too.

"Don't stop," she said when he finally took notice of her.

He smiled slightly and turned back to the keyboard, thinking for a moment. And then he started up a slow, romantic tune that made her heart melt. It was the song they danced to at Bill and Fluer's wedding when they first said the words to each other. Tonks smiled and strode to his side, resting her hands on his shoulders.

"I still love you," she murmured into his ear.

He turned his head toward her and returned her smile, fingers still playing their song.

"I love you, too," he replied, eyes lighting up for a moment, and then turned back to the piano, content.

And in that instant she knew: no one else would ever hold the keys to her heart the way he did.

A/N: I used to play the piano a lot and my dad is a great pianist and so I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the piano. Recently I've been trying to regain the skill I once had (though it was quite a while ago and I was pretty young when I last took lessons), and I came up with the idea for this fic. I wasn't sure who I wanted it to be about or what the situation would be, I just knew that it had to involve the piano. And tonight (or rather, this morning) when I decided to finally write this, I realized that Remus and Tonks would be just perfect. And so here it is. It's not really as long as I had hoped, but I like it anyways.

Soooo… Happy New Year to everyone who reads this and please take a moment of your time to let me know what you think!

PS: It is now 4:00 am... I really should get to bed, shouldn't I? Hehe... :-)
