When you get the flu
Miss Parker had the flu.
That's why she had to stay at home instead of chasing Jarod.
She was sure that he knew that she was ill and that's why she wasn't surprised when she heard footsteps coming closer to her bedroom.
There was a soft knock on her door.
"I was wondering what took you so long."
"Well, Miss Parker, I had a little job to finish."
"I hope you succeeded."
"Yeah, of course, Jarod." Her voice was filled with sarcasm.
"What's so funny, Miss Parker?"
"I was just thinking about this … us – you know."
"What about us, Miss Parker?"
"You come home to me when I'm sick although it's still my job to chase you and bring you back to the Centre. You knock on my door. I allow you to enter. We have a little talk about your last pretend. Don't you find this kind of funny?"
"I guess it's more tragic than funny because I only can come here and talk to you when you are sick and not in the "mood" to take me back." Jarod looked really sad.
"Who says I'm not able to catch you just because I'm a little exhausted?"
In the first moment Jarod seemed to be scared but then he noticed the smirk on her lips and knew that it was just her way to tell him that she didn't intend on returning him now to the Centre which really relieved him.
He quickly changed the subject.
"Is there anything I could do for you at the moment, Miss Parker?" He asked sincerely.
She looked at him and smiled.
"You would do anything for me, Jarod?"
"Well, maybe not anything, but let's say there are a lot of things I would gladly do if I could help you."
"Okay. First thing you do is stop calling me Miss Parker. You know, it's kind of aloof if you think about the circumstances."
"I could do that."
"And then you could take off your clothes and crawl under the linens."
He looked at her in disbelief. The fever seemed to have influenced her more than he had thought.
"Jarod, that wasn't a joke. And it has nothing to do with the fever."
He still couldn't believe what she had said.
"Jarod, do you remember when you were about twelve and YOU had the flu? My Mum told me to stay away because she didn't want me to also become ill. But I refused to follow her advice because I knew you needed me around. That's all I'm asking you for now: To return me a favour. And I promise you that I won't kill you for coming here without an invitation. Is that a deal?"
He still hesitated. But when he looked into her eyes he saw what he had been missing for years: Her total trust in him. He could see that she knew that she had nothing to fear when he was around.
And so he agreed, took off his shoes, his jeans and his shirt and settled down.
When he lay down next to her he felt her snuggle up against him.
A few minutes later she was asleep and by listening to her soft moans he knew that she had the sweetest dreams.
And although he knew that he would have to leave in the morning he hoped that he was the reason for it …
