A Gift

Prompt: #005 Nail Polish

Notes: Written for 7rainbowprompts.

"What the hell is wrong with you!?" John Sheppard cried out in exasperation, glaring at Atlantis' very own, very annoying astrophysicist. He propped his hands up on his waist and set his jaw, forcing himself to stand still and not attack the insufferable man.

Rodney glanced up from his work, his mouth gaping open in a surprised pout. He wavered a moment before he spoke. "What the hell is wrong with me?" he repeated finally. "What about you?" He stared defiantly back at John, matching his pose perfectly.

"Don't give me that, Rodney! I know you did it!" John threw back. "And now you're gonna tell me why!" He shot Rodney a glare intense enough to freeze even the strongest Wraith in his tracks and waited expectantly.

Rodney faltered and looked back at him for a moment before sighing in frustration and glancing around to make sure they were alone. "Fine!" he retorted. "I'll tell you why I did it!"

John continued to glare at him and when he didn't go on with his explanation, he wrung his hands and took a deep breath. "Rodney!"

"Fine!" he repeated, much less loudly and resolutely. "It's just that…well, I saw the way you two were looking at each other earlier this morning and it's Valentine's Day…and I thought…" He faded out and let his gaze drop helplessly to the ground.

"And you thought what!?"

Rodney sighed reluctantly, knowing that he wasn't going to be able to talk himself out of this one. "I thought Dr Weir would like something for Valentine's Day and seeing as you're too 'busy' with other things to notice, I sent her something myself."

He looked smugly up into the military leaders' face, his smirk fading as he saw John's expression. "I sent it with a note from you, of course!" he added hurriedly. "I managed to get hold of some technology that copies handwriting…"

"So, not only did you send Elizabeth a Valentine's gift from me – and I don't even know what the damn thing is! – but you copied my handwriting to do it, as well!?"

Rodney shifted uncomfortably and nodded. "Uh…yes?"

John sighed and shook his head. "Okaaay," he drawled out after awhile. "That gift had better be something pretty good, then! Cause if it's not…" He paused as a flood of McKay's previous ideas came to him and grimaced. "Rodney. What did you give her?" he prompted wearily.

Again, Rodney looked as if he'd rather be on a Wraith hive ship than where he was. "I…uh…it was orange nail polish," he replied.
