Title: Early to Rise
Summary: Early to bed, Early to Rise, Makes Someone Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.
DISCLAIMER: Not mine.
In the morning Edward can tell she's still there because his metal arm is warm where she had slept next to him. His eyes trail down her figure- a soft, dark lump in the blue light of early morning- and then they find a resting place on the bushy shadow of the small tree outside the window of their room. He watches the sun rise, too comfortable to move.
Winry's soft breathing echoes in the shell of his ear and Edward eyes the blue uniform she pressed for him last night. It hangs over the back of a wooden chair, neatly folded, his white gloves lying on the seat.
He will be up and ready for work by 8.30, and will arrive in the office at promptly 8.45.
Edward wonders, briefly, whether or not he should rise before Winry and fix breakfast.
The morning air is chilly. He decides to stay in bed for a bit longer.
In the morning Edward can tell she's still there because his metal arm is warm where she had slept next to him. Last night they had fought- not for the first time- and Edward was afraid he wouldn't be able to fix things.
Edward's belief in his own social clumsiness had been cemented when Winry had started to cry.
Edward feels the warmth creeping in through the metal port attached to his arm, lacing through his chest and striking him somewhere deep in the pit of his stomach.
He's nervous. Or nauseous. Or heart broken.
"Hey Win?," he whispers.
"Winry, I'm sorry."
"Shut up Edward. I'm trying to sleep."
She smiles against his neck.
All is forgiven.
In the morning Edward can tell she's still there because his metal arm is warm where she had slept next to him. He hadn't slept much at all.
The tiny velvet box resting in the bedside table drawer had plagued him from the moment his head hit the pillow.
Today was the day.
He shifted, quietly, gently, trying not to wake her. He wanted her to wake up on her own.
Winry was cranky when she didn't get enough sleep.
He reached over to open the drawer and pulled out the box.
He flipped the lid open and the plain platinum band flashed in the dark room.
"I didn't know you were awake."
She smiled softly at him.
"Not quite, but close enough."
"So…um, what do you think?"
"Platnium's a great metal. Beautiful. Strong. Expensive."
Edward flushed. Her answer danced around the topic. She had done that on purpose.
"Winry will you -"
"Ed, of course -"
"I understand if you'd rather-"
"No no, I-"
"No, its ok, if you don't want to-"
"No no! I d-"
There was silence for a moment before Ed took the plain band out and slid it onto her finger. They both laughed nervously.
Ed kissed her.
In the morning Edward can tell she's still there because his metal arm is warm where she had slept next to him.
He jumps a little when she speaks.
He hadn't expected her to be the one early to rise this morning.
"In the morning", she whispers, "I know you're still here because I'm warm where you sleep next me."
She giggles a little in her morning drowsiness.
He smiles and says nothing because he's afraid he'll ruin the moment.
Short. Sweet. To the point. Wuttyathink?
