The Last Resort

"I don't know what good this will do Harry," she said quietly as he pushed the door open.

"It may do some," he said ushering her in. "I've tried so many times, but I don't see how to do it, Ron will have no clue, you are the only one."

"But I don't know anything about Horcruxes, there is nothing in every book I've read. I don't know what I'll see, I could see me graduating, getting married, anything."

"Well there is only one way to find out," Harry said, stopping in front of a large ancient mirror. "This is it, now come stand here, right there," he said pointing to the ground in front of it. "It will show you what you most desire."

Hermione stood in the spot he showed, glancing at him briefly, seeing his eyes alight with hope. Hope that she would see what she, they had to do to destroy this Horcrux. It had been the most difficult of all of them, that was only logical, with it being the last one before they had to face Voldemort.

"Okay," she said, squaring her shoulders, taking a deep breath. "Step back Harry."

He squeezed her forearm encouragingly, and stepped to the side.

She looked up, and looked into the mirror. The only thing she could see was her reflection, a slightly older version of herself. She was smiling back at her, a few scars present on her face. Suddenly the image was over-run with people, Ron run up to her, wrapped his arms around mirror Hermione, and grinned at her. He then went out of sight, and came back with holding onto Padma's hand. Winking at her, he kissed her cheek. She saw all her friends standing around her, happy, but most of all they were free. The weight had been lifted off their shoulders, they could be teenagers again.

Her stomach lurched when she realised that someone was missing, the most important person. She didn't desire him, dead? Where was he?

As if reading her thoughts the crowd behind her parted, and someone walked through them, and spun mirror Hermione off her feet. Twirling her around, putting her back on her feet, kissing her as he did to the delight of everyone around them. Her image blushed slightly as she looked back at her, while a grinning Harry pulled her close, and waved at her.

"What do you see?"

Hermione jumped slightly, as she looked at him.

"A party," she said quickly, "when all of this is done, everyone celebrating."

"That all?"

"That's all."

"Oh," he said dejectedly.

"Don't worry Harry," she said, walking over and taking his hand, "we'll figure it out." Glancing behind her, "we have to," she said as she watched them smile at her.

"Thanks for trying Hermione."

"Anytime," she smiled.
