Golden

JohnnyxPonyboy

We are golden.

If only you knew that.

I mean, you're always so smart! You get good grades! Why can't you figure that out, huh? Why do I have to leave this stupid note? Why did I have to kill a guy and run away with you, just to muster up the courage to tell you...I love you, Ponyboy. I'm leavin' now...but I'll be back. We need more grocieries.

-Love, Johnny.

I looked up from the message scrawled in Johnny's messy handwriting in the dirt. I furrowed my eyebrows. I was just about to erase the words, when said sixteen-year-old scampered into the church, carrying a box. His big, black eyes where even wider as they rested on me, and he quickly busied himself with taking the items out of the box. I walked over to help him, and when I got close to him, he started to shake. I put a hand on his shoulder.

"Johnny? What's-"

When my hand touched his shoulder, he sort of...twitched.

"N-Nothing! I'm f-fine! Did you get my n-note?"

Oh! So that was it! I smiled.

"Yeah, Johnny...I did." I said, as slyly as I could. He blushed, but it was kinda hard to see since his skin is so dark. "So...you like me, huh? Like...like a crush or somethin'?"

"P-Ponyboy...I'msorrybutIloveyousomuchandI'lldieifyoudon'tlovemeb-" his words were jumbled, so I just held up a hand to stop him.

I moved a little bit closer to him, and he held his arms up to his face, caccooning himself.

"Don't h-hit m-me!" he whimpered. I grabbed his wrists, pulling them down to his waist. He was crying.

"I ain't gunna hit you, Johnnycakes! Y'know...you're cute. One hundred times cuter that the soc's girls and a million time cuter that the greaser broads. I mean, gosh! Ya look like a puppy!"

He brightened up. "Does that mean... you like me back?"

"Um...well...no. I'm not gay, Johnny. That's...kinda disgusting."

His tears flowed harder, and he squeezed his eyes shut. "O-Of course. R-Remember what you said? N-Nothing gold can stay."

When I woke up in the next morning...Johnny Cade was dead. Next to his body I found another note scrawled in the dirt.

We are golden.

If only you knew that.
