"Meanwhile, I've quit my job at the FBI and become a spokesperson for the Ab roller," Scully muttered to herself, not expecting any response from her partner.
He had been ignoring her for the past ten or so minutes, the baseball he had found earlier holding his interest quite effectively. She was sick of trying to get through to him, so the sarcastic comment had finally come out. It was about time for it, too! She had been so patient with him, so far!
"You've what, Scully!?" Mulder swung around to face her, dropping the ball in shock. The look of surprise on his face was comical and Scully would have snorted in amusement at it if she weren't so annoyed. "You quit your job?"
He stared at her, the ball lying forgotten at his feet. His expression was so serious and forlorn that Scully couldn't help it…
She played along.
"Yes, Mulder. Skinner is arranging for someone new to be assigned to the X files. I'll be gone by the end of the month." She smiled at him and shrugged. "I guess it's all finally caught up to me," she added on. "I just can't do it anymore."
"You…quit?" Mulder sputtered again, eyes widening. "Really?"
Scully stared at him for a moment in disbelief, as a range of emotions crossed his face: disbelief, confusion, sadness, surprise…
"Wait!" Mulder exclaimed suddenly. "A spokesperson for the Ab roller!?"
