It was while in the driving seat of her mum's dodgy Volvo that Rose remembered how boring and monotonous driving actually was. With The Doctor sat next to her a bit hyperactive after having had slightly too much coffee and he had made it unnaturally strong. With her mum sprawled across the back seat asleep, hardly surprising as it was ten o'clock at night. The TARDIS had broken down outside Jackie's flat so now they had to drive to Manchester, this apparently being the only place they could get the required part.
The Doctor had now started fiddling with various switches, opening and closing the glove compartment and playing with the radio. Rose knew he would recover from the hyperactivity soon, and be asleep not long after. Suddenly she heard a blast from the speakers. "Doctor! Turn it down!" she shouted over the racket.
"But Rose this is great! Good for the senses"
"You're talking rubbish you know!" Rose replied
The Doctor huffed and looked defiant until Jackie appeared between them and turned off the stereo. Giving the Doctor a look that a mother might give her son; a look that included a roll of the eyes and at the same time conveyed slight disappointment. She turned to Rose and ignoring The Doctor asked: "You look tired darling, would you like me to drive?"
"Yeah please mum, but I think The Doctor might fall asleep sooner than me."
They both looked around at the time lord in question as he struggled to keep his eyes open. "I'm not tired. I could stay awake all night." He slurred unconvincingly, the caffeine obviously wearing off.
Soon after, Jackie was driving the dodgy Volvo and Rose was sat in the back, The Doctor asleep with his head in her lap. She was subconsciously stroking his hair, just comforting him when he would fidget in his caffeine-induced, nightmare-riddled sleep. Jackie was listening to the radio again as a song came on Rose recognised the lyrics…
Baby you're all that I want when you're lying here in my arms,
I'm finding it hard to believe we're in heaven.
But Rose knew that The Doctor did not, could not and never would think of her as anything more than a friend, maybe even a best friend if she was lucky. As The Doctor lay there asleep in Rose's arms he wasn't asleep but had been inclined to intrude Rose's thoughts. As he turned onto his back to look up at Rose, he whispered "I love you"
Rose smiled widely back at him and mouthed "love you too"
They were both content for a moment to just smile at each other. As they had hit traffic Jackie turned around to check on them. The Doctor immediately closed his eyes, while Rose continued to stroke his hair.
"You really love him don't you?" Jackie stated like it was plain fact. "I suppose that can't be helped, although how old did he say he was? 900, not every mother gets to have her daughter go off travelling through time and space…" Rose had zoned out of her mum's rambling, when the car started again, she leant down to give The Doctor a soft, lingering kiss. As she heard the end of the song…
Love is all that I need and I found it there in your heart,
It isn't too hard to see, we're in heaven.
