She used to sit alone, thinking of the most glamorous ways to leave. Makeup done, hair all nice, picture perfect, just one last time. She didn't want anyone to see her like this. This was her time, her moment of weakness, she wanted to leave this place on her own terms. Go out with a bang, like all the greats. Empty bottle like Marilyn, beside her true love like the young Juliet. She really didn't feel the need to admit that dying beside the one she loved was out of the question. It was a one-way affection.

She absentmindedly ran a finger over the now smooth reminders of all the nights she had spent crying over him. The screaming sound of silence surrounded her. She sat and just waited. Waited for her phone to ring, waiting for the door to open, and waiting to hear his sweet voice, smooth like velvet. She waited. A watched phone never rings. When that shrill sound pierced the silence, she reluctantly perked up and put on her happy face. All of the information he needed was at her finger tips. He would never know that obliging to his ever command was one of the few things that brightened her day. He may not have known it at the time, but she was pretty much his slave. She would sit back after every phone call and over think the flirtatious banter that had recently been exchanged. These thoughts would make her sad all over again.

This vicious cycle continued to a long while. It all changed the day that house exploded. She had watched him enter the house, and she had also watched the house erupt into harsh flames. She lost it right then and there. The tears she had held back for so long started to fall. Slowly at first, one drop at a time, but it mere seconds, she was sobbing uncontrollably and the tears streamed down her face. She dropped her head and let it come to rest in her hands. She stayed this way for what seemed like an eternity.

She didn't even move when she heard a soft knock at her door. Heavy footfalls trying to be light. A gentle hand that landed one her shoulder. At first she was reluctant to turn around, but when he reached out and stroked the side of her face, she realized that this was not something she could avoid any longer. The moment he saw her watery, red-rimmed eyes, her enveloped her in an embrace that made it clear to her exactly how this was going to happen. She loved him and he loved her. As she melted into his arms, she realized that he was her place in life.
