Yeurgh. The writing style grates against my soul.

Meet Doctor Simon Tam.

He's a very good doctor. He heals people without asking for money – usually they don't have any to give, but if they do then Mal's the one doing the asking – and has a lot of love to give.

A very large amount of love to give.

Most of which is given directly to his very pretty sister, River.

This, of course, means that he will do anything for his very pretty sister River, and his very pretty sister River will do anything for him. It's the deal that they made with each other without ever really talking about it; it's the way things have always been; it is never going to change.

So, when the very good Doctor Simon Tam who loves his very pretty sister River very much goes off the ship to do some very good doctoring, he misses his very pretty sister River very much. Naturally. What with having all that love still to give her, which he definitely can't do if she's stuck on Serenity being on the lamb and various other danger-to-society related things.

And when the very good and very tired Doctor Simon Tam comes back from his very good doctoring to give his very missed and pretty sister all of that very large amount of untapped love, he immediately searches for her.

He finds his very missed and pretty sister in his room. In his very sterile room, where he has lived for a very active eight months without adding a single very personal touch. River is on his now-very-unmade bad and talking.

Talking in the very good Doctor Simon Tam's very empty room.

"Never in a million years."

A very quiet pause.

"No, no, dust in the attic. Never in a million years."

Another very quiet pause.

"Riddles. You're untrue. He'll come back."

The very good Doctor Simon Tam is very worried, now.

"Dust in the attic! Always there. Can't ever not be there. He'll come back."

The very good Doctor Simon Tam says, "Meimei, who are you talking to?"

His very pretty sister River looks up and rolls of the bed as though Serenity's grav field had made a very special exception for her. She is smiling prettily and dancing – no, walking very gracefully towards the very good Doctor Simon Tam…

…Who wraps her in a very warm hug, presses her forehead to his collarbone, and gives her all of the very large amounts of love that he has saved up very especially for her.

His very pretty and very loved sister says, "I told her that you'd come back."

"I was only gone a day, Meimei."

"I missed you, though. You weren't there."

The very good Doctor Simon Tam tries to lighten the mood. "You knew where I was. If anything had happened, I would have been back before Mal had his gun all the way cocked."

"That's impossible. Untrue."

The very good Doctor Simon Tam laughs very comfortably. "I'd do the impossible if you needed me. You know that."

"And you know that I always need you."

"Yes. But the folks planetside needed me more for a day. I'm back now, and all yours. You see?"

"You're mine. Very much so."

The very good Doctor Simon Tam loves his very pretty sister River very, very much. "Yes, very."
